With tensions flaring north of the border as Canadians protest their government’s oppressive COVID measures, a video of Ottawa police arresting an elderly man whom they pulled over for honking his horn has gone viral.

The capital city of Ottawa has been beset by truckers who are protesting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vaccine mandate with big rigs filling the streets and tooting their horns, putting citizens and members of parliament on edge over the cacophony and prompting an Ontario Superior Court judge to grant a 10-day injunction against the honking of horns as the regime pushes back against the “Freedom Convoy” that has inspired similar protests in other countries.

According to Justice Hugh McLean “Tooting a horn is not an expression of any great thought I’m aware of,” according to the CBC.

Following the court order, the encounter with the elderly man, who has been identified as a retired 78-year-old great grandfather named Gerry, took place on Monday as the two cops who towered over him proceeded to rough him up after he refused to produce his identification, resulting in much outrage on social media.

Journalist Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun took to Twitter to post images of the man’s hands following the takedown.

The reporter also shamed Trudeau who has been chased into hiding by the truckers: “Is honking a horn and a thumbs to a trucker a right like 78-year-old great grandfather named Gerry did in Ottawa before being forcefully arrested by @OttawaPolice – leaving him with cuts, bruises+an arm he can’t fully lift? Is that sunny ways? Or not tolerating certain people?”

He also posted an image of a document citing unnecessary “noise” along with pictures of the arrest and its aftermath.

Warmington provided an update on Tuesday: “I spoke with him. He’s in pain. He’s 4 foot 10. A retired janitor with 11 grandkids, 4 great grandkids. If this disgraceful treatment of a 78 year old for honking his horn and a thumbs up to a trucker is acceptable to @JustinTrudeau @fordnation @JimWatsonOttawa no one is safe.”

He also turned up the heat on Canada’s absentee leader, “Most have done what you have asked (demanded) and things still are not back to normal. Many people are triple vaccinated and still tested positive for #COVID19 including even you. They still must wear masks and live under overreaching rules. Vaccinations have not ended pandemic.”

A longer video of the incident in which an officer justifies the reason for the stop as just following orders, additional context of the old man using salty language is provided although many would contend that being cussed at is no reason for exercising the abundance of force by police who had an overwhelming size and age advantage.

The video drew strong reactions from Twitter users.

Despite the no honking injunction, the truckers have yet to disperse and on Sunday, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared a state of emergency over the protests which have clearly gotten the attention of a government that has used COVID as an excuse to flex its authoritarian muscles in the harshest manner outside of Australia.
