One of the busiest crossovers in the entirety of North America was brought to a dead halt as the ongoing protests by Canadian truckers reached the area.

The Ambassador Bridge and the I-75 highway through the Detroit-Windsor border, a major artery of both personal and commercial traffic, slowed to a crawl and then a standstill at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday. By about 8 p.m. the Ambassador Bridge was fully closed according to Detroit officials, Fox News reported.

Reactions to the blockage were mixed.

“It doesn’t make sense as they shouldn’t be blocking the borders or the roads,” Canadian trucker Nav Aulch told Click on Detroit.

Another trucker was nonchalant, saying, “[I] can’t get upset. I’m not the only guy stuck out here. Fortunately, I do have a sleeper cabin. I feel bad for those drivers that don’t have that option.”

Twitter’s reaction leaned towards the negative side.

The debate over the Canadian trucking protests has continued to rage, with such names as Elon Musk weighing in against embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the currently reigning Liberal Party. The truck convoy protesters say they will stay until Covid-19 related mandates and restrictions, seen by them as too harsh and stifling, are lifted.

Trudeau has fired back, dismissing them as a fringe minority, while others on the left have immediately gone to the old standby of accusing the truckers of being fascists and racists.

This holdup at a key crossing is expected to have repercussions for already strained supply chain issues in the U.S., according to various business leaders.

“Any delay or disruption in the supply chain creates problems, not just for agriculture but the state economy,” president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association, Chuck Lippstreu, told The Detroit News.

In the meantime, officials are asking travelers to instead use the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, or the Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, which remain open and have traffic moving, at the time of writing.
