‘Criminals are emboldened by soft-on-crime laws’: NY gubernatorial candidate shares heist videos

Twice last week, thieves strolled into The Westchester, an upscale mall in White Plains, New York, and proceeded to commit brazen robbery.

The first robbery occurred at a Louis Vuitton store, where the thieves started grabbing the goods they wanted and then fleeing out the door front. What appeared to be store employees could be seen trying to stop them, but to no avail.

The robbery went virtually unreported until New York gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, an outspoken Republican who hails from Westchester County, posted a witness-captured video of it to Twitter late Friday afternoon.

The original video was reportedly uploaded to TikTok.

Astorino blamed the robbery on the “pro-criminal policies” of current far-left NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, who’s refused to nix the state’s widely panned bail reform law that was instituted under disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“The pro-criminal policies of @GovKathyHochul (ie. No cash bail) have made communities all across NY less safe,” he tweeted.

Less than 24 hours later, Astorino returned with a second video — this one of thieves robbing a Burberry store at the exact same mall.

“Same @TheWestchester mall, different day, different men. This time @Burberry
was hit. Crime doesn’t just happen ‘in the city’ or ‘somewhere else.’ It’s getting worse everywhere in NY and everyone is affected when criminals are emboldened by soft-on-crime laws,” he wrote.

By “the city,” he meant New York City, which is where robberies and thefts have been the worst.

Astorino posted the tweet above at 9:14 am Saturday morning. At the time, his Twitter followers asked why the story wasn’t being reported by the press.

And indeed, not til 9:28 pm that evening did one news station, News 12, finally break the official story.

“Police are investigating several larcenies at high-end stores in Westchester – following a trend of ‘grab-and-go’ robberies happening in the nation. The Westchester Mall in White Plains has experienced two incidents – a grand larceny at the Burberry store and a display window being smashed at the Louis Vuitton store,” the station reported.

“A spokesperson from the Westchester Mall issued a statement, saying, ‘We have taken a number of additional steps to further enhance the security program at The Westchester, including adding White plains police officers to patrol the property, increasing additional private security patrol, deploying specially trained K-9 patrols among other measures.'”

As noted earlier, Hochul has frustrated her critics by refusing to nix the state’s no-cash-bail policy.

“We had a system in our state where the two people accused of the exact same low-level offense, nonviolent crime, two people — and depending on the size of their bank account, one of them went to jail and the other could go back home to their jobs or their schooling. That is the system that was addressed,” she recently said in defense of the legislation.

But she then turned around and purported to also care about public safety, as reported by Hudson Valley 360.

“I also believe that public safety is the most important responsibility of government leaders form the mayor to the governor of the state of New York,” she continued, adding that she was “open to” having “conversations” about perhaps changing (not nixing) the law.

New York Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican who like Astorino is also running for the governorship this year, responded at the time by arguing that everybody wants the lax nixed.

“Many areas in the state I’ve been to, the largest issue for people all across the entire spectrum from right to left, conservative to liberal, Republican to Democrat, they tell me they support repealing cashless bail. They share stories about how cashless bail in their county has eroded public safety,” he said.

It’s not clear there’ll ever be meaningful change in New York, a state where one of the most talked about members of Congress thinks the uptick in crime within the past two years has been the result of people being hungry and needing “bread.”

FYI, neither Louis Vuitton nor Burberry sell bread …
