Black Republican delegate barred from joining Virginia’s Black Caucus: ‘It was a spit in the face.’

The Virginia General Assembly has barred state Delegate Aijalon Cordoza — a black Republican– from joining the assembly’s Black Caucus.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Cordoza called the move an “insult.”

“It really did offend me,” Cordoza said. “It was a spit in the face. This says to me that I’m not black enough to be in the Black Caucus, and that’s an insult.”

It calls to mind then-candidate Joe Biden’s now-infamous comment to Charlamagne tha God: “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

“Defining what Black is by these liberal criteria is, frankly, wrong and disgusting,” said Cordoza.

Cordoza’s seat on the normally uber-liberal Black Caucus would have brought much-needed balance to the group, something the caucus would rather avoid.

“I wanted to represent all African-Americans, not just liberal ones,” Cordoza said. “I wanted a seat at the table.”

But seats don’t go to people who disagree with the caucus’s proposed legislation, it seems.

When presented with a questionnaire that asked if he was against anything in the Black Caucus’s 2022 agenda, Cordoza didn’t hold back. He listed 32 items.

“I thought they would want to know why I didn’t agree with it,” he explained. “I didn’t think we would agree on everything, but I thought they would let me in so they would want to hear my voice.”

Getting shunned by the unyielding group has led Cordoza to consider starting his own more inclusive and tolerant caucus.

“It might be a caucus of one,” he admitted. “But it will be a caucus when new members come that’s going to welcome all African Americans, regardless of their views because we want the African American voices to be heard, not just one singular voice rejecting all other black voices.”

“We want a full picture of what it is to be an African American, whether we agree or disagree,” Cordoza stated. “We need to come together and say, ‘this is who we are.'”

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Cordoza beat out incumbent Democrat Martha Mugler in Virginia’s District 91 and assumed office on January 12, 2022, becoming the district’s first black delegate.

“Tonight we made history,” he said in a celebratory statement following his victory. “I am honored to serve the people of the 91st District in the Virginia House of Delegates! To serve as the first Black delegate of the 91st district is the honor of my life.”

The victory was significant in more than one way.

With Del. Martha Mugler’s concession, Republicans took the majority in the House of Delegates.

But far from embracing the historic win, the Black Caucus has shunned him, leading users on Twitter to call the caucus out for bigotry.

“The Virginia Black Caucus is about segregation and hate,” said one user.

“There is a difference between racists and bigots,” noted another user. “The caucus is bigoted.”
