‘I was born free, I will die free’: Unvaxxed NC man denied kidney transplant for refusing jab

A double-amputee with a history of heart surgeries was reportedly turned down for a kidney transplant, even though he has 100-plus potential donors, because he won’t comply with a COVID-19 vaccination requirement.

North Carolina resident Chad Carswell, 38, is unwavering in his opposition to the jab, Charlotte news outlet WSOC-TV reported.

“I was born free. I will die free. I’m not changing my mind,” he declared about his opposition to receiving the injection, which is required under hospital policy.

After a battery of tests, his vaccination status came up at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and he told the doctors that he is “willing to die” and that it’s not up for debate.

Carswell similarly told The Washington Post that “There is not a situation in this world that I’ll get a vaccine. If I’m laying on my deathbed, and they tell me, ‘You have a kidney waiting on you if you get this shot,’ I’ll tell them, ‘I’ll see you on the other side.'”

Carswell, who previously was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, has acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “Without (a kidney transplant) there’s no telling how much longer I’ll be here, I have to have a kidney to prolong my life.”

The man receives dialysis three times per week and his failing kidney functions at just four percent.

In a statement, the hospital explained that “Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s policy follows the current standard of care in the United States, which is to vaccinate all patients on waiting lists or being evaluated for transplant. We understand that some patients may not wish to be vaccinated. In this case, patients can opt to be evaluated at another transplant center.”

The facility also noted that “the reason it is recommended is to provide protection for the patient. Transplant patients are at high risk for severe illness if they don’t have pre-existing immunity prior to being transplanted.”

Carswell claims that he’s had COVID twice, however, according to WSOC.

The local community has already raised money to pay for Carswell’s transplant.

Under the circumstances, he is looking into other hospitals that may be willing to perform the life-saving surgery.

“I’ve had conversations with my family and everybody who is close to me and they know where I stand, and there will not be a situation that occurs where I’ll change my mind on this topic,” he told the news outlet.

Guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health recommend COVID-19 vaccination for potential transplant candidates/recipients and potential donors.

Unfortunately, this is not a one-off situation.

For example, a Boston hospital is allegedly denying a heart transplant to a 31-year-old patient with end-stage heart failure who is also unwilling to get vaxxed.

“Given the shortage of available organs, we do everything we can to ensure that a patient who receives a transplanted organ has the greatest chance of survival,” Brigham and Women’s Hospital said in a statement.

“Our Mass General Brigham healthcare system requires several CDC-recommended vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine, and lifestyle behaviors for transplant candidates to create both the best chance for a successful operation and to optimize the patient’s survival after transplantation, given that their immune system is drastically suppressed. Patients are not active on the waitlist without this,”  the hospital added.
