Both sides of the political aisle were alight Wednesday afternoon over reports that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer plans to announce his retirement Thursday, giving President Joe Biden the opportunity to make the first high court pick of his term.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Breyer will step aside after serving on the high court for nearly three decades.
More from The Hill:
The timing of Breyer’s departure is consistent with the modern trend of Supreme Court justices stepping down when the White House is controlled by the same party behind their nomination, a dynamic known as “strategic retirement.”
With Democrats holding a razor-thin majority in the Senate, the question of Breyer’s possible retirement had gripped Washington, particularly liberal activists and progressive lawmakers.
Liberals have been attempting to pressure Breyer into retirement for some time now, and it looks like they finally got their wish. Immediately, Twitter was flooded with reaction from both sides.
Some reacted largely with humor and snark:
Whoever Biden wants to replace him raped me in high school. I don’t remember where. Don’t ask me to come back to DC. I’m afraid to fly. https://t.co/obLNYxKjtr

Congrats to new SCOTUS justice Kyrsten Sinema.

The least surprising thing ever is the retirement of Breyer.
If you need proof that the Dems think the GOP wins the Senate in November, there you are.

At least Breyer had the decency to do what that traitor RBG decided not to do.

Biden to replace Justice Breyer with Justice Baskin Robbins.

I have immense respect for Breyer as a man & a jurist, but I worry this decision reeks of partisanship. If the Court becomes just another instrument of partisan politics, then we’re truly lost. What about waiting until a 2nd Trump term to prove this isn’t about Team R & Team D?

If Biden keeps his campaign promise, Breyer’s retirement is a huge opportunity for Rachel Dolezal.

It is the year 2022 and there has never been a polyamorous genderqueer indigenous furry on the Supreme Court. I hope President Biden does the right thing.

Others were more serious:
.@POTUS, it’s time for a Black woman on the Supreme Court.

Susan Collins has voted to confirm every Dem-nominated SCOTUS Justice during her term in the Senate. Unless Biden picks someone *very* polarizing, I think 51/49 is the initial floor. These things can turn on a dime, but my guess is a relatively easy confirmation process ahead.

Your daily reminder that Mitch McConnell made up a nonexistent Senate rule to block Merrick Garland 8 months before election then killed filibuster to confirm Amy Coney Barrett 8 days before election when 65 million people had already voted

Democrats should totally do that. Harris wouldn’t be allowed to vote on her own nomination, and if somehow she were confirmed, the vice presidency would be vacant, meaning Democrats would no longer have a Senate majority. And it takes a Senate majority to confirm a new VP. https://t.co/bLCRVfB8oo

Wonder if Republicans will orchestrate a mass #METOO campaign against Breyer’s proposed replacement.
Or accuse the replacement of adopting their kids for racist reasons.
Or say the replacement’s faith makes them unfit for the court. https://t.co/6uJXHtQqMc

BREAKING: Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is going to retire, so President Biden will have a chance to replace him.
THIS IS HUGE.

Justice Breyer is retiring from the Supreme Court. We need a strong, pro-democracy pick to protect and expand voting rights and free and fair elections.

.@POTUS had a presidential campaign promise to nominate a Black woman as a Supreme Court Nominee. Now Justice Stephen Breyer is said to be retiring after 28 years on the Supreme Court. Will Biden hold true to his promise?

With Breyer stepping down, here are your names:
Ketanji Brown Jackson: D.C. Circuit
Leondra Kruger: California Supreme Court
Michelle Childs: South Carolina District Court— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) January 26, 2022
