Reactions pour in from all sides over report Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring; far left makes quick play

Both sides of the political aisle were alight Wednesday afternoon over reports that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer plans to announce his retirement Thursday, giving President Joe Biden the opportunity to make the first high court pick of his term.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Breyer will step aside after serving on the high court for nearly three decades.

The timing of Breyer’s departure is consistent with the modern trend of Supreme Court justices stepping down when the White House is controlled by the same party behind their nomination, a dynamic known as “strategic retirement.”

With Democrats holding a razor-thin majority in the Senate, the question of Breyer’s possible retirement had gripped Washington, particularly liberal activists and progressive lawmakers.

 

Liberals have been attempting to pressure Breyer into retirement for some time now, and it looks like they finally got their wish. Immediately, Twitter was flooded with reaction from both sides.
