The mother of accused cop killer Lashawn McNeil said she regrets ever calling 911 over her mentally ill son; a call that led two young NYC police officers to an ambush, leaving one dead and a second in critical condition at the time of this writing.
As of 1:38pm Monday, McNeil had succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head inflicted by a third officer, rookie Sumit Sulan, who also responded to the scene.
The 47-year-old McNeil had an extensive rap sheet and was out on probation. He was accused of killing Officer Jason Rivera, 22, and gravely wounding Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, who is clinging to life after the pair responded to a domestic disturbance call that turned deadly on Friday night.
Shirley Sourzes wept as she told reporters from the NY Post that she feels for the devastation brought upon the parents of the two officers by her son.
“If I knew, I never would have made the phone call. I would never have called!” Sourzes said.
“I would like to say to Mr. and Mrs. [Rivera] that I am deeply sorry,” she said through tears. “I know that there is not [sic] words that I can express. Your pain. Your sorrow.”
“Me and my family are not proud of my son taking of [sic] life.”
“There is nothing I can say to heal your sorrow, but God is a comforter. … And I know that he sent your son to do his will,” she said, addressing Rivera’s parents. “I don’t understand it. It’s not fair. My heart goes out to you and your family.”
The Post spoke to Sourzes just hours before her son died on Monday. The family declined comment after receiving the news.
Law enforcement officials told the outlet that McNeil was steeped in anti-authority philosophies and suffered from a God complex as well. His mother had urged him to seek professional mental help to no avail.
“I told him to submit himself to help,” she said. “At this point, his mental state was incapacitated. He thought he was God, and he wouldn’t submit himself to no one.”
Other unnamed sources said that McNeil blamed his mother for the blindness in his left eye; a claim of which Sourzes denies having any involvement.
“This happened years ago,” she told The Post. “He had a fixation on guns. At age 21, in Edgemere [in Queens], he had a shootout with the Regulators, they are a gang. He shot off a BB gun, and they beat him in the eye with a bottle.”
McNeil had been living in Baltimore and Sourzes and he were on their way back to NYC when an argument over his mental state and predilection for anti-government rhetoric devolved to the point where she placed the 911 call from her Harlem home after McNeil threatened her.
Sourzes said, however, that she was unaware that he possessed an illegally modified Glock .45-caliber handgun as well as a loaded AR-type weapon under the bed in his old room, law enforcement sources have stated.
A police source who saw police bodycam footage of the ambush called it “horrific.”
“It’s bad,” the source said. “They open that door, and he’s just standing there, and he shoots the first cop. Then he steps over him, and then he keeps shooting at him.”
Survivors of the Shield, a nonprofit founded by three NYPD widows in 1989 to help the families of cops killed in the line of duty, is asking for contributions for Rivera’s family and his widow, Dominique.
