Tensions between the Biden administration and Russia could be reaching a boiling point after British officials claimed that the Kremlin is planning to invade Ukraine to install a “puppet” leader in Kyiv, drawing the U.S. closer to a war with the nuclear powerhouse.

On Saturday, the UK government issued a press release stating, “We have information that indicates the Russian Government is looking to install a pro-Russian leader in Kyiv as it considers whether to invade and occupy Ukraine. The former Ukrainian MP Yevhen Murayev is being considered as a potential candidate.”

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss took to Twitter to draw a line in the sand, “We will not tolerate Kremlin plot to install pro-Russian leadership in Ukraine.”

“The Kremlin knows a military incursion would be a massive strategic mistake & the UK and our partners would impose a severe cost on Russia,” she wrote.

The reports that Russia could undertake such a bold move ups the stakes for Biden who is still reeling from the catastrophic foreign policy disaster in Afghanistan. Emily Horne, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said in a  tweet, “This kind of plotting is deeply concerning,”

The British government’s incendiary accusation drove President Biden to meet with his national security team on Saturday night, according to a White House tweet, the regime vows to “impose swift and severe consequences” on Russia if Ukraine is invaded.

According to an Associated Press report,  no actual evidence was provided to support the assertion that could potentially spark a shooting war: “The U.K. government made the claim based on an intelligence assessment, without providing evidence to back it up. It comes amid high tensions between Moscow and the West over Russia’s designs on Ukraine.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova took to social media to reject the British government’s accusation, “The disinformation spread by the British Foreign Office is more evidence that it is the NATO countries, led by the Anglo-Saxons, who are escalating tensions around Ukraine,” AP reported. “We call on the British Foreign Office to stop provocative activities, stop spreading nonsense.”

The news comes as Russia continues to mass troops and military equipment at the border despite harsh rhetoric from D.C., London and Brussels, according to a Fox News report, the State Department has ordered the families of U.S. Embassy personnel in Ukraine to evacuate the country this week as pallets of “lethal aid” equipment have arrived to arm defenders in the event of an invasion.

Families of U.S. Embassy personnel in Ukraine were reportedly ordered to begin evacuating the country as soon as Monday, according to the network, which cited a State Department official to notes that Americans will be encouraged to begin leaving Ukraine by commercial flights, “while those are still available.”

While a war with Russia over Ukraine could provide Biden with an opening to bolster his sagging popularity by being a wartime president in an election year, in a nation already divided, it’s not likely that he could draw the widespread public support that would be required for a new war, let alone one with Russia.

Some took to Twitter to express their opinions.

Events continue to unfold as efforts at diplomacy continue, U.S. Secretary Of State Antony Blinken and his counterpart Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are ongoing.
