NYPD rookie officer Jason Rivera who was tragically murdered in the line of duty last week is the loss of an incredibly bright future as the 22-year old officer had a huge heart behind his infectious smile.

A video released Saturday showed him giving a motivational message to incoming high school freshmen in 2017 as he graduated from Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School.

“High school is high school. Like, you know what? We don’t like it but we still have to do it,” he said. “And I want y’all to do it. Because when I was a freshman, I didn’t have no one to motivate me. I want to motivate ya.”

“Ya gotta put in the work. Ya gotta put in 100 percent effort. And ya know what? If it takes some time after school, ya know, so be it, because you gotta do it. If you don’t do it you’re not gonna make it nowhere in life.”

WHEELS commented on the video a heartfelt message of sympathy from the school, noting that Rivera “embodied our core values and lived a life that was dedicated to improving our community.”

“It is with great sadness that our WHEELS family extends our deepest condolences to the Rivera family. Jason had a huge, warm smile and a personality to match,” the message read. “Jason was an exemplary member of our school community, who embodied our core values and lived a life that was dedicated to improving our community. Thank you for your service and sacrifice Jason.”

The school also shared photos of Rivera smiling as he was “giving some feedback on some student work,” as well as a photo of him as a 9th grader posing with a group in front of an oversized $5,000 check to mark their contribution to the team that helped earn the money for the Safe Passage Project which helps provide lawyers to immigrant and refugee children who face deportation.

Another clip posted on Saturday shows that he carried his broad smile with him on the job as well.

“This is our hero. Look at this smile. Look at his baby face. This isn’t fair. He didn’t deserve this,” the video was captioned by Angel L. Maysonet, self-described as a retired NYPD Detective.

Rivera can be seen smiling and laughing as the camera pans by him with a speaker noting  that “Buzzin on the scene” and  that he “look good in uniform too!”

The young cop wrote a letter to the commanding officer of the police academy in Nov 2020 detailing that he knew that becoming a police officer “was the career for [him]” and his goal was to “better the relationship between the community and the police,” according to a report by the New York Post.

Rivera was slain while on a domestic disturbance call at an apartment in Harlem. He and his 27-year-old partner Officer Wilbert Mora were reportedly ambushed as they neared the bedroom where suspect Lashawn McNeil was according to his mother who called the police during a fight with her son. Mora remains in critical condition, fighting for his life in the hospital after being shot in the back of the head.

The suspect – who has a long rap sheet and was out on probation for a 2003 felony narcotics conviction – was shot twice by a third officer as he tried to flee the scene and was in critical condition as of Saturday.

Many people blamed the woke ideologies that have infiltrated the district attorney’s office and been soft on crime for the tragic event that took Rivera’s life.

Many others simply took the time to remember the good person that he was.
