As the rest of the world is slowly but surely moving on from mask-wearing, one of America’s most leftist school districts is predictably doubling down on them.
The Los Angeles Unified School District announced on Friday that starting on Monday, all students must wear medical-grade/surgical-grade masks both inside AND outside while at school.
“Masking will be required at all times, indoors and outdoors. It is required that all students wear well-fitting, non-cloth masks with a nose wire. All employees are required to wear surgical grade masks or higher,” the new policy reads.
Despite the confusing description that appears to recommend different types of masks for students vs teachers, the Los Angeles Daily News notes that it boils down to them all wearing the same thing: “[m]edical-grade masks, such as N95 and other surgical-level protective face coverings.”
In other words, everyone must #MaskHarder, as noted by the LA Parent Union:

This new rule isn’t being well-received.
Case in point:
Get ready for the lawsuits! You can’t breathe correctly with the n95 masks It’s simply child abuse,

Screw the Communist at @LASchools . So fortunate my daughter isn’t in that district. Feel bad for the parents and kids that are.

They simply *cannot* let go of masks. It’s psychotic.

The Cult of the Mask will never go away until they’re forced out.

No No No No. Stop this nonsense @LASchools. It’s not “mask harder” because the last ones didn’t work after to years. The virus is endemic, time to go the other direction.

Poor kids.
I’d move them out of the district immediately

Nonsense. When other countries are dropping mandates, LAUSD continues to punish kids.

Note what the latter Twitter user wrote: “When other countries are dropping mandates, LAUSD continues to punish kids.”
Actually, a large number of Western countries never pursued mask mandates for very young children, period.
“Many of America’s peer nations around the world — including the U.K., Ireland, all of Scandinavia, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy — have exempted kids, with varying age cutoffs, from wearing masks in classrooms,” according to a New York magazine piece published in August.
“Conspicuously, there’s no evidence of more outbreaks in schools in those countries relative to schools in the U.S., where the solid majority of kids wore masks for an entire academic year and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”
As for older children, just last week U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson eliminated all mask mandates, including for adults and children alike.
I had real concerns about mask-wearing policy for children in school, especially those with special educational needs, or who are hard of hearing and strongly welcome the announcement from @BorisJohnson and @nadhimzahawi that from tomorrow this will no longer be the case. https://t.co/vrwv54iyFq

Also last week, health researcher Vinay Prasad wrote for Tablet magazine that the “United States is uniquely aggressive in masking young kids.”
“Europe has always been more relaxed on this issue, and the World Health Organization advises against masks for kids under 6 and only selectively for kids under 11,” according to Prasad.
Others say that a more accurate description is that the United States the been “uniquely stupid” in its obsession with masking schoolchildren (not to mention Supreme Court justices).
“Masking is now little more than an appealing delusion. It arms us with a visible symbol that communicates our commitment to minimizing the pandemic’s damage. It makes some of us feel empowered by giving us something ‘we can do’ in the face of a largely invisible threat,” Prasad’s piece continues.
“To a certain extent, this is understandable. But most of the masks worn by most kids for most of the pandemic have likely done nothing to change the velocity or trajectory of the virus. The loss to children remains difficult to capture in hard data, but will likely become clear in the years to come.”
Dovetailing back to Los Angeles, the Daily News does claim that students “may apply for exemptions from the mask mandate, if a medical or mental condition exists that makes mask wearing impossible.”
However, the Daily News offers no examples of the district ever actually approving an exemption request, which is important since left-wing bureaucrats have a history of denying such requests.

Additional rules announced Friday include that daily “health screening” is required for everybody stepping onto a LAUSD campus and that all students 12 and older must be vaccinated starting in the fall.
