The only thing falling faster than CNN’s ratings is the network’s credibility and on Tuesday, the self-proclaimed “most trusted name in news” was savagely mocked over its complete lack of self-awareness over the announcement of a brand new team dedicated to covering misinformation.
Word of the creation of the special unit comes as the remnant of what was once a legitimate news organization struggles to adapt to life after Donald J. Trump, a figure who dominated coverage for the duration of his four years in the White House and his departure from the White House has left CNN with gaping holes to fill now that the Trump Derangement Syndrome goldrush has petered out.
In a Twitter post soliciting resumes for 3 positions that he needs to fill, Alex Koppelman who is the managing editor for CNN Business proudly announced the formation of the new team, clearly oblivious to the irony given his employer’s own tendencies to act as purveyors of misleading information.
Hello Twitter! Some very exciting MEDIA JOBS to tell you about. I'm hiring 3 people for a new CNN team dedicated to covering misinformation. Thread about the team/jobs starts here. Please feel free to share far and wide, and if you’re interested, reach out or apply at the links.

He then tried to define “misinformation.”
What do we mean by covering misinformation? Really it’s about covering reality: The uses, abuses, and distortions of it, the people twisting it, and the effect that has on all of us. We already do a lot of important work on this; we want to do more,” he wrote.
Koppelman added, “Do you feel like you have to jump down every rabbit hole you see? Do you get mad when you see liars taking advantage of people? Do you spend more time on the internet than anyone really should? This might be the job for you!”
And the two reporters. Do you feel like you have to jump down every rabbit hole you see? Do you get mad when you see liars taking advantage of people? Do you spend more time on the internet than anyone really should? This might be the job for you! https://t.co/WnkfqHgpDW

Twitter users leaped at the opportunity to shower CNN with the ridicule and scorn that it invited upon itself.
Many noted that, when it comes to CNN misinformation, it will always be hard to top the network’s live coverage of the “fiery but mostly peaceful” protests in Kenosha, WI last summer when violent rioters laid waste to a section of the city.

Another user tweeted, “Okay. I’ll do it. But I demand to be able to hold meetings in person while I masturbate. None of this Zoom nonsense,” a reference to CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin who was busted pleasuring himself during a Zoom call.
Okay. I’ll do it. But I demand to be able to hold meetings in person while I masturbate. None of this Zoom nonsense, I want the Louis CK contract.

Author Max Abrahms asked, “Are you going to re-cover the Steele dossier, Hunter’s laptop, the Russian bounties, ISIS’ Air Force in Syria and all the other tales CNN told?”

Other reactions from Twitter users:
This is rather surprising. You don’t normally hear of left-wing networks hiring staff to call out its fellow anchors, reporters and analysts for spreading nonsense. Kudos to CNN for finally looking in a mirror to call out their misinformation and disingenuous takes. https://t.co/puqrRbaPHU

So CNN spews misinformation and then makes a team dedicated to cover their own lies?, https://t.co/sHBeens25A

Why would you hire a team to cover your own network. Seems weird to me.

CNN “covering misinformation” is like Stalin trying to pass voting rights legislation.

The news came on the same day that CNN announced that it had hired former NBA player, sports analyst, and social media influencer Rex Chapman as a host for the network’s new streaming service despite his checkered past.
Here’s something worthy of a @RexChapman retweet: #CNNPlus is adding Rex Chapman to its lineup this spring. pic.twitter.com/dDlUgyvsJu

In addition to Chapman’s alleged drug and gambling problems, he was arrested for stealing merchandise from a Scottsdale, AZ Apple Store in 2014. While he has probably learned from his mistakes, it isn’t exactly a good look for CNN given its recent history of scandals including a former producer for fired anchor Chris Cuomo who was charged with sex trafficking including underage girls.
