House Majority Whip James Clyburn has doubled down on President Joe Biden’s widely panned “domestic enemies” rhetoric by claiming that the filibuster must be eliminated to protect Americans from the “domestic enemies that showed up on Jan. 6th.”
Speaking on CNN this Sunday morning, he offered this incendiary take after being asked by host Jake Tapper about dissident Democrat Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s warning that the elimination of the filibuster could come to bite her colleagues in the rear.
“Her basic argument is that Republicans are going to take over the chamber at some point, and Democrats are going to need that filibuster,” Tapper said to him.
“Just last night, Donald Trump called for Republicans to pass stricter laws when it came to the election — voter ID, restrictions to ban drop boxes, stop no excuse absentee voting. Doesn’t she have a point?”
Clyburn claimed that she doesn’t, because Democrats allegedly want to just temporarily eliminate the filibuster to push forward so-called “voting rights” legislation.
“No, she is not right about than. We just got around the filibuster to raise the debt limit. Why? Because we don’t want to put the full faith and credit of the United States at risk. No one has asked her to eliminate the filibuster. The filibuster is there for all of these issues that may be policy issues,” he said.
He appears to believe that it’s possible to arbitrarily eliminate the filibuster for just one bill. However, this has already been proven to not be the case.

Clyburn continued by arguing that the filibuster must be eliminated temporarily to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the American people’s right to vote.
“When it comes to the Constitution of the United States of America, no one person sitting downtown in the spa ought to be able to pick up the form and say you are going to put a hold on my ability to vote,” he said.
“I wish they’d stop that foolishness, because if we do not protect the vote with everything that we’ve got, we will not have a country to protect going forward.”
His rhetoric parallels that of the president, who’s essentially made the dubious case that he and the Democrat Party at large must be granted autocratic power because otherwise, Republicans will turn America into an autocracy.
Continuing his remarks, Clyburn then called Jan. 6th rioters “domestic enemies.”
“I don’t know where we got the notion that this democracy is here to stay no matter how we conduct ourselves. Our job, we took the oath of office to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. There are domestic enemies that showed up January 6th and they didn’t stop there,” Clyburn continued.
“They’re still going on, and you hear it when the president [former President Donald Trump] tweets out or whatever he said about getting rid of people’s convenient voting places, saying to paraplegics that we can’t make it convenient for to you vote, saying to 90-year-old you got to stand in line four and five hours to vote, and if anybody gives you a glass of water, they will be put in jail. That’s third world stuff.”

However, these claims are a complete distortion of what the GOP election reform laws passed by Republican governors across the country actually do. Take the reform measures passed in Georgia, which was in fact where the president delivered his “domestic enemies” speech last week.
“Voters can still bring bottled water or other food or beverages with them to stand on line to vote, as people often do when waiting at Disney World or to buy concert tickets or in other public places where people stand on long lines,” National Review notes.
“Voters can still also, if they like, order food; the bill doesn’t stop the Domino’s Pizza man or the local hot dog cart or taco truck from doing business. And if you feel impelled to donate food and drink to voters, you can still do that, too; you just have to give it to the poll workers so they can put it out for general use.”
Why? So that clever political propagandists don’t show up at the polls and use food/drink to bribe people into voting a certain way.
The so-called “voting rights” bill being pursued by Democrats would, among other things, strip states of the right to regulate elections with common-sense rules and place all the power into the federal bureaucracy.
But as noted by Clyburn’s furious critics on social media, this isn’t the Federal States of America — it’s the United States of America:
