People have occasionally thrown rotten vegetables and other items at politicians. Andrew Giuliani, however, recently had the unusual distinction of being pelted with a flower pot of all things.

Giuliani, son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, and aspiring Republican gubernatorial candidate for New York, received the blow while intervening in a fight he saw happening near Penn Station last Saturday. Giuliani had been walking to a meeting with the president of the New York Young Republicans when he saw the violent altercation breaking out between a man and a woman, and decided to try to intervene:

“I got between the two of them. He had a flower pot. I think it was intended for her but it hit me on the left side of the face. Thankfully it was a plastic pot and not a clay pot. The soil mostly hit me. But I wasn’t expecting it. It was a little bit of a shock,” Giuliani told the New York Post.

The man then threatened to “beat the s**t” out of Giuliani when he started to call 911 and get the police on the scene, as the woman screamed, “you leave me no money b***h.” While the police did eventually get involved and a report was filed, there have not, as of the time of this writing, been any arrests due to a lack of positive identification of the assailant, according to statements given by a New York Police Department spokesman to the New York Post.

Giuliani used the occasion to get on Twitter and speak about abusive relationships, telling people to intervene and urge victims to get help:

Most of the responses were harsh, either endorsing violence or suggesting the whole thing was fake:

New York City has been experiencing a noticeable jump in crime recently, according to residents interviewed by the Post:

“It’s deteriorated. You have to pay a lot more attention coming to work and leaving work than you used to. The entire city is that way,” said Thomas Weisse, owner of Caribbean Cuts Flowers & Foliage.

While Mayor Eric Adams has promised to try to restrain violent crime, that seems unlikely to go anywhere, given that Manhattan’s new district attorney, Alvin Bragg, has stated that he will not seek jail time for a multitude of crimes.

Giuliani stated his personal belief that he had “no confidence” in any prosecution for the assault happening under Bragg’s watch, and has promised to use his authority to remove Bragg from office if elected governor.
