Adding to the litany of critical and outspoken “woke” performers who suddenly find themselves on the wrong end of the spear, Patton Oswalt has issued an apology for paying a compliment to his friend Dave Chappelle. The horror!
On New Year’s Eve, Oswalt had just finished performing when he received a last-minute invitation to join Chappelle at a show happening nearby. It seemed a logical thing to do for two people who had known each other for more than three decades. The pair had a successful show, and Oswalt commemorated the occasion on social media.
“Finished me set at @mccawhall and got a text from @davechappelle. Come over to the arena he’s performing in next door and do a guest set. Why not? I waved good-bye to this hell-year with a genius I started comedy with 34 years ago,” the 52-year-old actor and comedian wrote on Instagram.
“He works an arena like he’s talking to one person and charming their skin off. Anyway, I ended the year with a real friend and a deep laugh. Can’t ask for much more,” he added in the post that included a picture of the two.

Apparently, spending time with a “real friend” who is having image issues is verboten.
Chappelle faced backlash in October after the debut of his Netflix special “The Closer” which critics claimed was transphobic and harmful to transgender communities. As a result, Oswalt received swift disapproval from some of his more socially-conscious followers:
Your inability to grasp the severity of what Dave did is staggeringly obtuse.

I’m disappointed in your decision to align yourself with Dave Chappelle, Patton. People can disagree, sure, but not when it comes to fundamental human dignity.

Disappointed to hear this. I can’t support @DaveChappelle after he doubled down on his transphobia.

Throwing the marginalized under the bus isn’t how you achieve class consciousness, dude.

Unfortunately, Oswalt, known for voicing Remy in “Ratatouille,” caved in to the pressure and immediately issued an apology for being in the same space as the beleaguered Chappelle, despite their more than three-decade friendship.
“I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time this New Year’s Eve. We’ve known each other since we’re teens. He’s a fellow comedian, the funniest I’ve ever met. I wanted to post a pic & an IG story about it — so I did. The friend is Dave Chappelle,” he wrote in a separate post on Instagram.
“He’s refocused and refined ideas a lot of us took as settled about race & history & Life On Planet Earth and spun them around with a phrase or punchline,” Oswalt wrote. “But we also 100% disagree about transgender rights & representation. I support trans peoples’ rights — ANYONE’S rights — to live safely in the world as their fullest selves,” he said. “For all the things he’s helped ME evolve on, I’ll always disagree with where he stands NOW on transgender issues.”

“I’m sorry, truly sorry, that I didn’t consider the hurt this would cause. Or the DEPTH of that hurt,” Oswalt continued in his mea culpa.
He even admitted that he had “(naively) deleted a lot of posts in the comment thread,” saying he “wanted a ‘nice comment thread’ about the pic with my friend.”
“Ugh. So easy to think someone ELSE needs growth and miss the need in yourself. Gonna keep trying,” he concluded.
Needless to say, Oswalt’s groveling apology over spending time with his supposed long-time friend earned him no sympathy on social media.
Why did you apologize for hanging out with Chappell? So disappointed in you. You caved to the rabid “woke/cancel crowd”. Soooo not cool.

“OMG I’M SOOOOO Sorry! I’ll give up all my friends. I’ll betray everything I ever believed. I’ll lie as much as you want. I’ll hate women and call them orcs. Please don’t cancel me. I’ll KNEEEEL.” Patton Oswalt, January 2022 https://t.co/PmfcsCWeSo

Patton Oswalt going woke-apologetic and neither he nor those who applaud it realize that he’s apologizing for being in a picture with a black man. This woke, cancel-everything clown-show is getting dumber by the minute.

I’m sorry but Spence, I mean Patton Oswalt, is kinda deserving this. When you call half the country (us) assholes, you box yourself in with the woke cancel mob. There are “terms of service” of being on the left. Patton breached them by associating with Chapelle. Karma’s a bitch. https://t.co/wDeVq2oQqf
