Occasionally, someone will try to rob an ice cream parlor, of all places. Occasionally, that will turn out to be an absolutely awful idea, as one robber in Brazil found out recently.
The attempted robbery took place in the Santa Rita neighborhood of the city of Brusque, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina this past Sunday. The entire thing was caught on film and shows the disastrous attempt at robbing the cashier foiled – with a chair.
The would-be robber had brought a knife, obviously thinking that would be more than enough to cow some ice cream parlor workers, but found out the hard way that he had seriously underestimated their resolve, the Daily Mail reported.
As seen in the video, the robber, wearing a motorcycle helmet, doesn’t make threats to the cashier for long before another worker calmly gets up, walks over, and smashes a chair into the man, before being joined by another worker. The workers then grab the assailant and drag him down, pinning him to the ground until police can arrive.
According to the owner of the shop, it was the first time someone had attempted to rob it in the four years it has been open. “At the time, it was very scary. Afterwards, we discussed the consequences of what could have happened,” the owner added.
The suspect, who has remained unidentified at the time of writing, was taken to receive medical care and was immediately taken away by the police after being released from the hospital.
Robbing a business can certainly be a risky prospect, to put it mildly. In the United States, a 14-year-old boy shot a robber who was in the process of attacking his mother, who was behind the cash register, back on December 16th.
All too often, however, robbers get away with it, as seen by the recent spat of incredibly brazen flash-mob style mass robberies, often conducted in broad daylight. The epicenter of the issue seems to be in California, which recently made shoplifting of goods totaling less than $950 a misdemeanor rather than a felony, and has been said by some to be a green light to robbers.
When the police do try to intervene, they are sometimes seen as the problem rather than the natural response to criminal behavior. Police in San Jose, California, were criticized for arresting a woman and teen “interfering” with their attempts to stop and arrest robbers, who all got away unscathed.
For at least one ice cream parlor in Brazil, however, it seems likely that potential robbers may have second thoughts before deciding the shop is a quick target for some easy cash.
