To the surprise of absolutely no one, yet another so-called leader in the Democratic Party is again employing one of the basic tenets of authoritarian control and hypocrisy: Rules for thee, not for me.

Democrat New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is facing criticism after jetting off to Costa Rica for an eight-day family vacation amid a surge in Omicron cases of the COVID-19 virus in the Garden State. This after a Nov. 30 State Department warning to avoid travel to the Central American country in light not only of COVID-19 risks but also surges in crime.

Murphy, however, ain’t got time for all that hooey. Though, as vice-chair of the National Governors Association, he was gracious enough to call in from Costa Rica for President Biden’s COVID-19 response meeting on Monday. Biden told him “thank you” before the call was shut off to the public.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver has been serving as acting governor since Murphy and his wife left on the 22nd of December. They are expected to return on Thursday.

When asked by the press whether or not he thought a trip was prudent given that New Jersey has a seven-day-average COVID case count of 14,405, Murphy replied, “We’re going to spend some time together as a family,” NJ.com reported. “Please God, we need that.”

Previously in August, during the height of the Delta variant scare in the state, he was criticized by former NJ Gov. Chris Christie for bad optics when Murphy decided to take a 10-day recess in Italy.

And there’s plenty more to love about the guy.

In March of 2020, he defended the need to keep his own armed personnel while shutting down “non-essential” gun stores in the state. When asked about the double standard, he replied at the time, “It is what it is.”

Later that summer, Murphy justified his attendance at a George Floyd protest, saying he “can’t imagine what it would look like if we told people, ‘You have to ignore systemic racism, just stay inside.'”

He lifted his stay-at-home orders two days later.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), a former Democrat, spoke of the hypocrisy the governor demonstrates.

“Governor Murphy defying orders, even his own, is nothing new,” the congressman said. “He has left the state of New Jersey on personal trips multiple times during the pandemic, yet continuously imposes mask mandates, vaccine mandates, and virtual school is now back on the table.”

“If Governor Murphy can travel out of the country when the State Department urges the American people to stay put, Americans should be afforded the same discretion regarding their personal health choices just like our leaders,” he continued. “It is fitting that President Biden escapes his responsibilities by traveling to a Delaware beach house after saying responses to COVID-19 should be left to the states, and then Governor Murphy runs off to a Costa Rican beach.”

The NJ state GOP also called out Murphy in a Twitter post:

Former congressman and Fox News contributor, Sean Duffy, joined the network’s “Fox and Friends First” Tuesday and echoed the sentiments of Murphy’s critics. He said of the caravanning governor, “Stay home and do your job.”

He noted that while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) also received some backlash for taking a vacation to Cancun in February of 2021, Cruz is a U.S. senator and not the governor of his state.

In Murphy’s case, Duffy remarked, no one in the governor’s sphere of influence seems to care about his leisurely ways.

“It’s fine because he’s a Democrat and he’s Phil Murphy,” he said.
