In what has started to become a trend, another high-ranking Democratic official has been caught in an embarrassing Covid-19 related fiasco, this time involving the governor of Connecticut hosting what some are dubbing a “super spreader” event.
Governor Ned Lamont and his wife Annie Lamont have been facing scrutiny after a number of Covid-19 cases have allegedly been linked to a holiday party on December 11th at their Greenwich home, the Daily Mail reported.
The gathering had a “small number of guests,” with the exact number not publicly known at the time of writing. In fairness, Lamont was at least consistent with the some of the rules applied to the masses: guests were reportedly required to provide proof of vaccination status and negative Covid-19 test results in order to attend, though its not known if masks were worn at the party itself. This is in contrast to repeated sightings of various officials flouting the regulations they themselves imposed, most particularly the wearing of masks.
Lamont’s team, however, has been in damage control, repeatedly denying that the spike in cases had anything to do with their one party.
“The governor and first lady test regularly and have tested negative in each instance since the event. The positive tests occurred long after their party,” said Max Reiss, Lamont’s Director Communications in comments to Hearst Connecticut Media.
While Lamont has been in attendance at numerous parties before and after the one on December 11th at his residence, all of the other ones reportedly had high numbers of vaccinated guests, according to Reiss. Some of the more noteworthy parties, with potentially hundreds of attendees, were the Connecticut Restaurant Association gala at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino, in addition to the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce annual fundraiser breakfast in Rocky Hill.
There were approximately 3,165 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last week, giving Connecticut a positivity rate of 9.02, and bringing the total number of official infections since Covid-19 first hit in early 2020 to 474,557. Currently, there are 16 virus-related cases requiring hospitalization, and 75 deaths have been reported, for a total of 837 in Connecticut since the pandemic began.
Many of the new cases are being attributed to the “Omicron” variant of Covid-19, which has caused a fresh wave of disruptions and restrictions due to its seemingly higher than normal transmission rate, despite some saying the actual symptoms themselves are relatively mild.
It is worth noting that Lamont has mostly not tried to re-impose statewide mandates on Connecticut. Local authorities have been left to impose whatever restrictions they deem necessary, or decline to impose any at all if they so choose. There is still a mask mandate in place for everyone, vaccinated or not, in places such as hospitals, clinics, public transportation, and schools.
