Dr. Leana Wen, CNN medical analyst and Washington Post columnist, said Wednesday that she wishes President Joe Biden would be just a little more authoritarian and “go further” with restrictions on the unvaccinated in America.
“I think what we will see with Omicron is a very large number of infections due to Covid-19,” Wen told Poppy Harlow of CNN on Wednesday.
“The question, though, is are we going to see a decoupling of infections with hospitalizations and death? That would be ideal, the entire point of vaccination, the main point of vaccination, I should say, is to reduce severe illness. And so, if we’re able to avoid overwhelming our health care systems, that would be the goal,” she added.
In addition to her aforementioned roles, Wen was previously the commissioner of health for the city of Baltimore, MD, and served somewhat briefly as the president of Planned Parenthood. She was ousted from her position at Planned Parenthood in 2019 when it became apparent that her philosophy and vision for the abortion provider allegedly differed too greatly from that of the board of directors.
Billionaire founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, tweeted his dire warnings to the nation Tuesday, evidently with the belief that everyone shares his opinion and all will follow his lead.
Just when it seemed like life would return to normal, we could be entering the worst part of the pandemic. Omicron will hit home for all of us. Close friends of mine now have it, and I’ve canceled most of my holiday plans.

When prompted by Harlow, Wen echoed Gates’ assessment, saying, “I do have a lot of concern about what happens to parts of this country, for example, that have very low vaccination rates.”
“This is another reason why I think President Biden’s message yesterday was the right one in some way — in saying vaccinated people should move on with their lives with precautions,” she continued. “But I wish that he would go further to restrict the activities of the unvaccinated because they are the ones who are still spreading COVID and prolonging the pandemic for all of us.”
Wen’s statement comes directly on the heels of her telling CNN Monday that masks are “little more than facial decorations,” after being asked about potential health risks that could be present at the iconic Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration in NYC.
“Well I do not think Mayor de Blasio should be canceling the New York City event because it requires proof of vaccination and it’s outdoors,” the doctor explained. “We should be keeping the events that are safe and also the events that have fun for people, too. We can’t be canceling everything especially if we’re going to be living with COVID for the foreseeable future.”
“I would say that if you choose to go, that you’re vaccinated and boosted make sure that you’re wearing a mask even though it’s outdoors there are lots of people packed around you, wearing a three-ply surgical mask. Don’t wear a cloth mask, cloth masks are little more than facial decorations. There’s no place for them in light of Omicron,” she concluded.
Nevertheless, the heavy hand of government goes marching on. Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago, for example, announced Tuesday a city-wide vaccine mandate required for customers of restaurants, bars, movie theaters, and fitness centers, complete with an unveiled threat to those who don’t comply:
To put it simply, if you have been living vaccine-free, your time is up. If you wish to live life as w/the ease to do the things you love, you must be vax’d.
This health order may pose an inconvenience to the unvaccinated, and in fact it is inconvenient by design.
