A raging inferno that engulfed the mansion where former Virginia Governor Chuck Robb and his wife Lynda live created a stunning and horrifying set of pictures.

The fire itself could be seen for miles, prompting one passer-by on the opposite side of the Potomac River to alert emergency services, believing that the fire was occurring in a Maryland neighborhood.

By the time firefighters reached the house at 11 pm, the blaze had already overcome the entire first floor of the home. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue reported that two people were able to safely evacuate the house and were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but it hasn’t been reported whether those people were Robb and his wife.

Photos and video of the fire posted to Twitter depict an absolute nightmare scenario, with flames covering every inch of the home as it is destroyed:

By the time the inferno was extinguished, the $3.4 million mansion was completely gutted. It is still unclear what caused the fire.

My former boss's house burned down last night. Yes, it's a mansion; yes, they're well off financially. But it's still two people in their 80s who lost their home of 50 years (and a lot of LBJ memorabilia), and 3 adult kids who lost where they grew up. https://t.co/9SFcdBs8gQ

How very terrible to have your home destroyed. Mrs Robb is Lynda, the daughter of Lyndon & Lady Bird Johnson
