A number of congressional Democrats from battleground districts have privately expressed concerns about the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee’s misplaced priorities, including its obsession with former President Donald Trump.
According to one “vulnerable House Democrat” who spoke with Politico, the conflict between the DCCC’s priorities and the priorities of those Democrats up for reelection next year “is a real f–king problem.”
“That’s how one vulnerable House Democrat summarized growing discord between members in battleground districts and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee,” Politico reported Friday.
“That member and five others Playbook spoke with in the past week alleged that the Democratic organization whose purpose is to help the party keep the House next year is instead hurting their chances of reelection.”
The Democrats listed three complaints, all three of which trace back to the former president in one way or another.
The first complaint was “that there’s been too much Trump talk, not enough focus on pocketbook issues,” as reported by Politico.

Some of the evidence, the Democrats said, can be found in Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe’s spectacularly failed election bid last month. Every other word out of his mouth prior to the Nov. 3rd election had been “Trump.” And it clearly cost him dearly.
The problem is that DCCC chair Sean Patrick Maloney continues to beat the anti-Trump drum, despite what happened last month.
“This is crazy to me that the DCCC is rolling out a playbook that they know doesn’t work and that they encouraged people in 2018 not to use,” the Democrat who used the f-bomb told Politico.
This Democrat claimed that going into the 2018 midterms, the DCCC urged congressional Democrats to focus on issues that matter instead of Trump. The tactic seemingly worked, as Democrats retook the House that year.
The second complaint was that the party keeps embracing radical policies.
During her tenure as DCCC chair from 2019 to the beginning of 2021, Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos, who reportedly represents a pro-Trump district, pushed back on Democrat leaders whenever they tried to forge ahead with radical ideas.
“But Maloney has taken the opposite tack,” according to Politico.
In August, he reportedly threatened to withhold campaign contributions to any “moderate” Democrats who refused to vote for the exorbitant “Build Back Better” plan.
Then in the fall, Maloney used Twitter to slam a vulnerable Democrat, New Jersey Rep. Josh Gottheimer, for the alleged crime of urging Pelosi to allow a stand-alone vote on the so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill.

The third complaint was that because Maloney lives in a district that Trump barely won in 2016 and outright lost in 2020, he doesn’t understand what it’s like representing a district that’s overtly pro-Trump.
“What’s problematic is not only is he pushing the wrong strategy. … The biggest problem is that he’s attacking front-line members for taking a different perspective. If you want to win purple and red seats, you have to distance yourself from other Democrats. He is a part of this ‘party purity’ march that is just going to ensure that we are DEEP in the minority,” one Democrat told Politico.
“I think Sean Patrick’s ‘leadership’ — and please use air quotes on that — at the DCCC is the reason why we should not have elected colleagues running that organization,” said the first member. “Because it’s not about protecting the majority; it’s about Sean Patrick Maloney. … We’ve got a vanity project,” another added.
This sort of criticism isn’t coming from just those within the party. Fredrik deBoer, a self-identified Marxist, recently published a searing Substack critique of the Democrat Party and its media allies’ obsession with Trump.
To better convey his point, he centered his critique around far-left MSNBC host Chris Hayes.
“I see Hayes as a synecdoche for a broader tendency – a set of left-liberal Democrats who are relentlessly focused on Trump and Trumpism, January 6th, and their (incorrect) belief that this is an unprecedented threat to the United States,” he wrote.
“Their politics is resolutely retrospective, seeing in Trump the epitome of all that is wrong with American politics. … [T]hey want you to know that the problem is Trump. Always Trump,” deBoer added.
To be fair, Democrats aren’t entirely alone in their obsession. A handful of so-called conservatives — namely the “Never Trump” types — have also displayed an obsession with him.

So have an even smaller number of Republicans — namely Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, the two “Republicans” who accepted a role on the Democrats’ Trump-focused Jan. 6th commission.
