Fla man blames Trump for his assault on cops Jan 6th, before judge sentences him to 5 years in prison

A Florida man who acted out violently during the mayhem at the Capitol on January 6 was sentenced to over five years in prison, the harshest punishment yet for those who turned out for a protest against the election results that turned ugly.

On Friday, Robert Palmer learned his fate in a Tampa courtroom where, despite his plea for leniency and a showing of contrition for his actions, he was hit with the stiff penalty along with a stern lecture from US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama appointee whose sentence matched what the Justice Department had requested.

“It has to be made clear that trying to violently overthrow the government, trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, and assaulting law enforcement officers in that effort is going to be met with absolutely certain punishment,” said Judge Chutkan.

The 54-year-old Tampa Bay resident has previously pleaded guilty to assaulting police in October with video of him using a wooden plank and a fire extinguisher as weapons during a confrontation with Capitol Police being essential in establishing his guilt. He will face 63 months in prison followed by 36 months of supervised release, he was also ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.

Prior to his hearing, Palmer passed along a handwritten letter to the judge where he apologized and appeared to blame the chaos on former President Donald J. Trump and other leaders.

“They kept spitting out the false narrative about a stolen election and how it was ‘our duty’ to stand up to tyranny,” he wrote. “Little did I realize that they were the tyrannical ones, desperate to hold onto power at any cost, even by creating the chaos they knew would happen with such rhetoric.”

His letter will almost certainly be used in Speaker Nany Pelosi’s sham committee to investigate the so-called “insurrection” which seeks to establish the narrative that a ragtag band of rabble-rousers along with hundreds of mostly peaceful protesters were a legitimate threat to overthrow the entire U.S. government.

During the hearing, Palmer broke down, saying “I’m really, really ashamed of what I did,” stating that he saw the video of his actions which was shown on MSNBC while he was in jail. He was arrested in March after the far-left Huffington Post published a story identifying him, acting on information provided by an internet sleuth who zeroed in on his distinctive flag-patterned jacket.

The Justice Department issued a statement following Palmer’s sentencing: “Palmer is the first Jan. 6 defendant to be sentenced on the charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous or deadly weapon. This was the longest sentence imposed to date in the investigation into the events of Jan. 6.”

“Although no specific injury was tied to this conduct, based on the size and weight of the plank and fire extinguisher, and the speed and force with which Palmer threw them, the objects were capable of inflicting serious bodily injury.” the statement read.

Leftists took to Twitter to rejoice over the news.

Nearly 700 face charges for their role in the Capitol chaos, the vast majority having been swept up in an emotionally charged moment that got out of hand and, unlike Palmer, committed no acts of violence.
