Lots of people have expressed distaste for mask mandates and found ways to protest them. One Florida man, however, was recently ousted from a flight, not for declining to wear a mask, but for what he wore as a mask.
Adam Jenne of Cape Coral found out the hard way on Wednesday that United Airlines doesn’t accept a woman’s thong undergarment as facial protection. Originally bound for Washington, DC, he was ejected from the flight before it could take off at Fort Lauderdale Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office was awaiting him when he was removed, but as of this writing, he doesn’t appear to have been charged with anything.
In a statement to the New York Post, United Airlines stood by their decision and commended their crew for the way they handled the situation:
“The customer clearly wasn’t in compliance with the federal mask mandate and we appreciate that our team addressed the issue on the ground prior to takeoff, avoiding any potential disruptions [in] the air.”
Yet according to Jenne himself, it’s all part of a stunt he’s been performing with multiple airlines, he said to NBC 2:
“It’s all nonsense, COVID doesn’t know that we’re at cruising altitude. It’s stupid. The whole thing is theater. Every single flight has been met with different reactions from the flight crew. Some with a wild appreciation, others confrontational,” he added.
Jenne did get a refund for his flight, though, in spite of the sheriff’s office and the Transport Safety Administration getting involved and says he plans to try again on Thursday via another airline. For Jenne, it has more to do with protesting the mask mandate than any kind of actual attempt to use an improvised mask.
Jenne noted that he has been banned from flying United Airlines following his stunt but expressed his surprise when other passengers, “maybe a dozen,” followed him off the flight after he was booted.
Reactions on Twitter were the usual mixed bag. Some people stood with United:

While others saw the man as a sort of folk hero, or even a victim of discrimination:
I believe a thong can identify as a mask! And if you believe in science it offers almost the same level of protection. Shame on United for their blatant discrimination.
