Brandi Davis, the now-former principal of NBA Lakers’ LeBron James’ I Promise School, reportedly resigned after being investigated for allegedly slapping an 11-year-old student in the face.
The investigation for the incident started in September when the accusation of abuse was first made. The mother of the child claims that her son “had a busted lip and was bleeding” as a result of the alleged altercation.
The mother claims that Davis herself texted her regarding the alleged slap, claiming that she approached the student regarding a mess in the bathroom, and slapped him in the mouth over his reported use of profanity. When asked why she thought it was appropriate for her to lay her hands on a child, she claimed she “just reacted and slapped him.”
Davis has reportedly been an Akron Public School district educator for two decades and was a deeply ingrained part of the community.
Releasing a statement on the incident, the “I Promise” school for “at-risk” youth took on a conciliatory tone, not accusing the principal of any wrong-doing, and reaffirming their “We are family” motto.
“We are family, and that means we support every one of our I PROMISE educators, students, and family members through anything they may be going through. In this and in every case, we will always do everything we can to make sure all are loved and supported during these times as we learn and grow as a family.”
The outcome of the investigation is still pending, though Davis could be facing a whole lot more than an involuntary resignation if she is found guilty.
Shockingly, the reactions on social media to the story are mixed. Some parents believe that educators have no right to lay their hands on children, while others with a more “old-school” view on discipline believe that kids need a good slap every now and then:
That's why your kid is probably not going to amount to much. Coddling your child while making him/her believe that he is untouchable and beyond reproach is a recipe for failure in life.
