Rumors of Cuomo family ties to the mafia have been around since Mario Cuomo was governor of New York and prompted a sharp rebuke from his son and now former Gov. Andrew Cuomo a few years ago, but even real-life mob boss Sammy “The Bull” Gravano doesn’t put himself on the same level as Andrew Cuomo in one category.
While the media has largely ignored the COVID-19 nursing home scandal involving Cuomo, focusing instead on the sexual harassment allegations that eventually forced him out, the former Gambino crime family member who confessed to 19 hits doesn’t want to be compared to the disgraced Democratic governor, saying even he “would never do that.”
Cuomo issued an order in March 2020 that all New York State nursing homes must accept residents and not discriminate if they had a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19, and while he would eventually rescind the disastrous order, it was determined that his administration misrepresented how many residents died in nursing homes — more than 15,000 died in nursing homes and related facilities in New York, which is nearly double the number his administration initially claimed.
Gravano and former Colombo caporegime Michael Franzese discussed Cuomo during an episode of the Mafia States of America series, moderated by Patrick Bet-David.
“I hate to get into Governor Cuomo. I will a little bit because he’s Italian and I can’t stand it,” Gravano said in a clip obtained by Fox News. “One, because he’s Italian and I’m embarrassed to have someone do what he did as an Italian.”
“He killed 15,000 people by putting people with the coronavirus in [nursing homes] with old people,” Sammy the Bull continued. “I don’t give a f— who tells me to do that, whether it’s [former President] Trump, the president, the vice president, you, him, I would never do it. And I’m a badass. I’d never do it.”
The former underboss to family head John Gotti went on to say that a person who does something like that has “no concern” about the fallout, and that his “great-grandchildren who aren’t even born” will be forced to “deal with s— like this.”
Director Gerard Michaels told Fox News that while governor, Cuomo stonewalled them when they attempted to get in contact with his office for comment on the series.
“They were silent. Any of our emails were never responded to,” Michaels said. “And every time we tried to make a phone call, all they did was push to another department, who then tried to push us to another department, who tried to push us to another department, who then tried to push us to another department.”
Bet-David stressed that the former mobsters were “no fans” of Cuomo or his younger brother, Chris Cuomo, who was recently fired from CNN.
“Their biggest challenge with this is that the moment you’re a politician, you are held to much different standards than they did,” Bet-David said. “Now, don’t get me wrong – obviously a Rudy Giuliani is necessary to help clean the streets of New York so families don’t have to worry about the safety of their kids while they’re out there playing.”
“But I would say that’s the position that Sammy and Michael would take: that they think many politicians like the Cuomos get away with murder, which is essentially what happened,” the host continued.
In 2019, when younger brother Chris Cuomo got into an altercation with a man who called him “Fredo” from “The Godfather,” Andrew Cuomo said, “It fuels the hate. Italian Americans are not Mafia. They are not Mafia. Don’t you dare liken my family to the family you saw in ‘The Godfather’ or ‘The Sopranos.'”
“Mario Cuomo lived with those rumors of the Mafia. They hurt him. They scarred him,” he said of his father. “Every Italian lives with it. Don’t you glorify it. And don’t you repeat it, and don’t you institutionalize it.”
