Some people bare their soul in the name of political statements, and some, such as ex-Army officer Brittany Ramos DeBarros, bare quite a bit more than that in a seedy bar.
DeBarros is a Democratic socialist candidate for New York’s 11th district, and is attempting to unseat Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY). The Staten Island district has a large number of corrections and police officers, many of whom are military veterans. Deployed to Afghanistan as a captain in the Army in 2012, DeBarros had since become a vocal critic of the war effort.
The lengths to which she would go to express anti-war sentiment was exposed, recently, along with the rest of her. A video surfaced on Saturday of DeBarros stripping down as part of a burlesque show in 2019 conducted as an anti-war protest in the Starr Bar in Flatbush, Brooklyn, reported the New York Post.
In the video, DeBarros and three other women in uniform (one in Marine Corps style, the other in an Air Force uniform), strip down and dance to Edwin Starr’s popular Vietnam-era protest song “War,” as well as the “Let It Go” song from Disney’s “Frozen.”
DeBarros posted a video of the burlesque performance to her Instagram page alongside the hashtag #dropbootiesnotbombs.
“I was a captain in the Army. I was deployed to Afghanistan. I was like, “This is bull**t,”‘ DeBarros tells the crowd in the video, then goes on to say that she became committed to “anti-war, anti-imperialist [and] anti-racist work” after her re-deployment back to the U.S.
“When you see me pause and cover my face in the first video it’s because I’m actually overwhelmed with emotion and how liberating it felt to angrily tear that uniform off in front of an audience,” said DeBarros in the Instagram post. “I’m proud of this show and it still brings me so much joy to watch myself step into long under-nourished pleasure and passion,” she continued.

At the time of the dance, DeBarros had tweeted that she was nearly court-martialed for “posting facts” regarding the war, back when she was still in uniform (and not on stage).
Furthermore, I was called a traitor and almost court-martialed for posting literal facts about what our military is up to. Now the #AfghanistanPapers prove that officials were knowingly LYING about this war. I would like to know what’s going to happen to them.

DeBarros has raised over $350,000 since announcing her candidacy in January of this year, according to FEC records. Most of her funding has come from out-of-state donors. The afro-latina candidate is expected to put up a considerable challenge to the other Democratic candidate, Max Rose, who is the former representative of the district. Rose is also a veteran and former officer.
