MSNBC contributor Jason Johnson said Monday that he believes the federal government should take over elections in the state of Texas. He argued his case on the network’s “The Reid Out,” and naturally, host Joy Reid was in agreement with the assertion that minorities in the state are being denied their right to vote.
The United States performs a census every ten years, and every single state in the union redraws their congressional maps based on data from those population reports; something that Attorney General Merrick Garland evidently doesn’t understand himself, as evidenced by his announcement Monday that the Department of Justice is suing the state of Texas for allegedly violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
“These districts they make look like a Dexter blood splatter, they’re just pieces here and there for whatever Republicans want,” Johnson oh-so-cleverly opined. “This is an emergency. I know this is something that hasn’t been done in 56 years, but you know what happened when the federal government said, ‘Hey, Brown vs. Board of Education, we have to integrate schools?’ They sent troops. They sent federal officials to places and said, ‘You will let Black children into school.’”
He continued, “This administration can say we have concerns about how elections are being conducted in this particular state. We’re going to send officials down there. We’re going to send election observers. If we think people’s civil rights are being violated, we’ll do a federal takeover. I know lots of people are going to scream about this. The right-wingers are going to scream. This is what the federal government is supposed to do. If states are violating people’s civil rights, you’re supposed to step in.”
A Supreme Court ruling in 2013 dealt with then-Attorney General Eric Holder – whose lead Garland seems to be following – in the case of Shelby County v. Holder. The court’s decision made it more difficult for federal agencies to intervene in elections and placed more weight on the burden of proof needed to determine whether any allegations of discrimination in congressional voting maps were founded.
Johnson laboriously continued with his sky-is-falling tirade, even making sure to apply the fallacious and tiresome “handmaid” moniker to Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
“We know perfectly well the courts alone won’t be good enough for this because by the time this gets to the handmaid and all those other people hiding in the Supreme Court, they will say what Texas is doing is fine. In order for this government, for the Biden administration to save next year’s elections, they’re going to have to get aggressive and have to get creative about protecting people’s rights.”

because its not like this country was founded on the anger of the people not being represented and a government just telling them, ‘shut and do what we tell you, you filthy peasent’

Oh another moron on the Joy Reid show. Wow. That never happens. The federal government CAN’T just “takeover” elections in Texas. We have a thing called a constitution in the United States.
