The sister of a Philadelphia murder victim had some very strong words for the city’s district attorney, who denies that there is any kind of crime spike or “crisis” in the city.
While 2021 isn’t officially over, so far there has been a record number of homicides in 2021. In spite of this, District Attorney Larry Krasner insisted on Monday that the city is not experiencing a crime spree, and certainly not a “crisis of violence.” Krasner tried to deflect blame and say that gun violence is “way up” but the other crimes that “usually go up and down with violence” have been “relatively flat,” in the Monday press conference:
“We don’t have a crisis of lawlessness, we don’t have a crisis of crime, we don’t have a crisis of violence. It’s important that we don’t let this become mushy and bleed into the notion that there is some kind of big spike in crime. There isn’t. There is not a big spike in crime. … There is not a big spike in violent crime. Neither one of these things is true.”
Rosalind Pichardo, founder of Operation Save Our city, was furious and went on “Fox & Friends” to express her outrage. Pichardo’s brother, Alexander Martinez, was shot and killed in January of 2012, prompting her to start her organization. Pichardo insisted that Krasner is wrong and that there is a crime crisis, and that it goes “across the board.”
“He is the top law enforcement officer. If there was a crisis he would look bad. There is definitely a crisis here in the city of Philadelphia,” Pichardo said, referring to Krasner’s denial.
“And how dare him say that the loss of a mother’s child is not a crisis? …. This city is saturated with homicides. These streets are overwhelmed with death. And for him to say that there’s no crisis, it’s insane,” Pichardo continued.
“You have got DA’s who let criminals out on crime and then with gun possession, and then they come out, and then they murder someone’s kid like Samuel Collington. He was a wonderful kid. Murdered on the streets of Philadelphia. Like many hundreds of kids, murdered. It’s across the board,” Pichardo stated, referring to the murder last month of Samuel Collington, a 21-year-old Temple University student.
The statement by Krasner was too much for even the former Democratic mayor of Philadelphia, who wrote an op-ed slamming Krasner and the city authorities for being so negligent in the face of the issue.
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, there have been 521 homicides in 2021 thus far, which is a 13 percent increase over the 2020 numbers, and the most murders in the city since 2007. Incidents involving firearms specifically have increased by 4.4 percent, and the number of gunshot victims has increased by approximately 3 percent during 2021.
Using police statistics, it does, however, appear to be true that other violent offenses such as rape, unarmed robberies, and aggravated assaults, have gone down since 2020. Property crime has been steadily rising for years, climbing 5 percent.
While it’s not entirely clear what the future holds, it’s not hard to see what Philadelphia and other city authorities, such as those in San Francisco are going to do about it – nothing at all.
