Smash and grab robberies are becoming increasingly popular in large cities, and one San Francisco police lieutenant has had it with the liberal policies that are allowing them.

Lieutenant Tracy McCray visited Fox News’ ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ to lament the current state of her hometown, claiming that taking it easy on crimes such as shoplifting has created this problem.

“San Francisco, as you can see from all the videos, the boarded-up shops, the empty spaces for retail, is a city that is spiraling or already in the bottom of the toilet,” McCray said, noting how “frustrating” it is for her to watch the city she was raised in fall apart.

“For me, it’s very frustrating because I’m a native here, born and raised. The time I did spend… before I was promoted to lieutenant which is my day job, I see all of this in real time and it is concerning,” she commented. “I see this when I’m working, I see this when I’m off duty, I see this as a vice president of the union representing the men and women trying to serve this city to the best of their ability, I don’t know about our other partners, what they’re doing, but we have a problem, let’s recognize we have a problem and let’s get to a solution.”

“I’ve got to ask, what percentage of the population, people who live in San Francisco are frustrated by this?” Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked, perhaps trying to get a feel for how many liberals believe that such events are simply the cost of living in a big city.

“I will say a lot now, you mention the D.A. (Chesa Boudin,) the recall that is happening, 83,000 signatures, they want to blame the Republicans. We don’t have 83,000 Republicans in San Francisco,” McCray emphasized. “No, we don’t. So it’s a cross-section of people who are now fed up. The west portal area just had a sideshow which had set people off so we know what we need to do, let’s just have the guts to do it and stop talking about it. It’s incredibly frustrating, but even as frustrated as we are, we are still willing to show up and to do our job and I wish our other partners in the justice system would just do theirs.”

One of the legal barriers standing between police and the ability to crack down on these smash and grab robberies is Proposition 47, which lowered the prosecutorial threshold for retail theft, which critics say effectively legalizes shoplifting. The goal of the proposition was to reduce overcrowding in prisons and redirect funds back to community health including mental health and drug treatments and programs for at-risk youth.

So far it would appear that the only people benefitting from reduced criminalization of shoplifting are the people strolling out of stores with their arms full of whatever they can smash and grab.
