The daredevil mascot of the Jacksonville Jaguars is famous for his dangerous bungee jump stunts at the start of the game but had a mishap at Sunday’s game requiring the intervention of safety officials.
Jaxson de Ville has had lots of practice with his role as the Jaguar mascot, and has dazzled fans with a backflipping bungee jump off the top of the stadium prior to the kickoff in Jaguars games countless times, Fox News reported.
On Sunday, however, during the Jaguars’ game against the Atlanta Falcons, the backflip went off seamlessly – at least at first. On the way down, however, he abruptly stopped, hung up in the bungee cord. However, de Ville was then safely lowered to the stands without injury, except perhaps to his pride, as the entire thing was recorded by fans to make the rounds on social media:

The botched jump may have been a bad omen to the Jaguars though, as the tweets above noted, as they went on to lose against the Falcons 21-14, in what was the Jaguars’ ninth game of the season. The game had started poorly, with the Falcons leading 14-0, then 21-3 after Matt Ryan’s successful touchdown pass to Russel Gage.
Towards the end, however, it seemed that the Jaguars might make a comeback, as Trevor Lawrence connected with Tavon Austin and James O’Shaughnessy for a 2-point conversion, followed up by Matthew Wright obtaining a 34-yard field goal in the fourth period.
Regardless of the performance by the Jaguars themselves, fans have long been appreciative of the mascot’s jumps, as seen in this tweet of a more routine backflip in September:

The stunts aren’t limited to home games, either. De Ville has even gone bungee jumping in Britain, during the NFL London 2021 game against the Miami Dolphins:

While the incident looked embarrassing, at least nobody was hurt, and it probably involved a lot less pain than another football mascot with sharp talons perching directly on your head.
