Former secretary of state and first lady Hillary Clinton leaped back into the spotlight this week to rail at Americans who have not lavished praise on President Joe Biden for his “major” accomplishments.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow earlier this week, the failed Democratic presidential contender complained that the country needs influencers who can explain to Americans why Biden’s presidency is successful and why so many people don’t seem to “appreciate” what he has supposedly managed to accomplish.

“You know, democracy is messy. You know, a lot of people got, oh, I think kind of frustrated looking at the messy process of legislation,” she said, in reference to House Democrats’ inability to quickly advance the recently passed infrastructure bill, which was in danger of going down in flames after passing the Senate until 13 Republicans crossed the aisle and rescued it.

Voters “didn’t really appreciate that within a year, the Biden administration has passed two major pieces of legislation through both the House and the Senate. They passed another major piece through the House that will soon be in the Senate,” she said, adding a reference to a coronavirus relief measure and Biden’s massive “Build Back Better” bill, elements of which have been regularly opposed by Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.).

The former New York senator also hailed Biden’s “extraordinary accomplishments” and pushed for others to help Americans understand their supposed significance.

“Because of the way we are getting our information today and because of the lack of gatekeepers and people who have a historic perspective, who can help us understand what we are seeing, there is a real vulnerability in the electorate to the kind of demagoguery and disinformation that, unfortunately, the other side is really good at exploiting,” said Clinton.

Biden has also suggested that too few Americans really understand the alleged positive impact his legislation has had on the country thus far.

“What — like, for example, if I had — if we were all going out and having lunch together and I said, ‘Let’s ask whoever the — whoever is at the next table, no matter how — what restaurant we’re in — have them explain the supply chain to us.’ You think they’d understand what we’re talking about?” Biden said earlier this month.

He went on to say, however, that Americans were “smart people” but they live in a “complicated world.”

Others have noted that Biden’s agenda has been far from overwhelmingly successful, as reflected by his polling numbers.

“Eleven months into his term, and a year from a midterm election that appears likely to end his legislative majority, the cold reality for Biden is that his presidency is on the brink of failure,” Jonathan Chait noted in New Yorker magazine Monday.

“Business lobbyists swarmed over Washington, ripping chunks out of his Build Back Better program. The scope of his agenda kept shrinking in tandem with his poll numbers,” he added.

“Biden is like a patient wasting away from some undiagnosable disease,” Chait continued, adding that the reason might be that “Biden’s party has not veered too far left or too far right so much as it has simply come apart.”
