In response to the cultural battle being played out in school boards across the nation, one senator is introducing a “Parents Bill of Rights” in an attempt to counter “woke bureaucrats.”

The bill is going to be introduced by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), Fox News reported. In a one-page draft statement obtained by Fox News, Hawley laid out the case against the left’s attempt to “shut parents out,” and proposed his bill as a solution that would shift the law into the favor of the parents.

“America has long recognized the right of parents to direct their children’s education but we are now seeing a concerted effort by the Left to shut parents out. Whether it’s Joe Biden’s Justice Department attempting to classify parents as ‘domestic terrorists’ or activists funded by dark money who seek to quietly introduce critical race theory into school curricula, education has taken a back seat to radical politics in many schools and parents are taking notice. It’s time to give control back to parents, not woke bureaucrats, and empower them to start a new era of openness in education,” says an excerpt of the draft.

The document also allegedly directly points to the gubernatorial race in Virginia, widely seen as a bellwether for a greater cultural shift, and quotes Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe, who became infamous for saying “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

The Department of Justice is also mentioned, specifically for its memo instructing the FBI to place greater priority on investigating individuals threatening school board members, which was widely seen as an attempt to intimidate parents into shutting up by comparing them to domestic terrorists:

“All across the country, American parents have been mocked, bullied, and belittled by bureaucrats and school board members who think they know better. When it comes to education, parental engagement is not the problem. It’s the solution.”

The actual “Parents Rights” themselves are as follows:

  1. The right to know what their minor child is being taught in school, including, but not limited to, curricula, books, and other instructional materials.
  2. The right to information on who is teaching their minor child, including guest lecturers and outside presenters.
  3. The right to information on individuals and organizations receiving school contracts and funding.
  4. The right to visit the school and check in on their minor child during school hours.
  5. The right to all school records, medical or otherwise, concerning their minor child.
  6. The right to information about the collection and transmission of their minor child’s data.
  7. The right to have sufficient accountability and transparency regarding school boards.
  8. The right to know about situations affecting their minor child’s safety in school.

In addition, the bill will require that “school board meetings pertaining to curricula, safety, and other student issues shall be held in public and allow for public comments,” presumably in response to allegedly secret board meetings that have plagued the drama-ridden Loudoun County School Board.

Punishment for violating these rights will reportedly involve strengthening the power of parents to sue schools that do not adhere to these terms. In addition, repeated violations of these rights that indicate a pattern will trigger serious reductions of federal education funding for the violating jurisdiction.
