Now that President Joe Biden and the entire Democratic Party are spectacularly imploding and on the verge of being booted from power, establishment Republicans are scrambling to position themselves as viable alternatives to former President Donald J. Trump in the 2024 election.
One of those who is seeking to resurrect his political career and emerge from the crab barrel of candidates aspiring to regain control of their party is Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, who was once touted as a rising star for the GOP before Trump’s arrival and subsequent vanquishing of the dominant Bush-Romney faction during his epic march to the White House.
Having retreated to the safe space of television punditry, Christie is taking aim at Trump as he seeks to paint himself as the savior of the Republican Party and is getting much face time in the media to promote his new book, “Republican Rescue: Saving the Party from Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden” which is set to hit bookshelves this week.
Christie’s book, some of which could be derived directly from Nancy Pelosi’s talking points — specifically using the batty Q-Anon conspiracy theory to smear Trump supporters as dangerous crazies using a broad brush — is yet another effort to demonize tens of millions of ordinary Americans who embraced the bombastic billionaire outsider as an alternative to what they viewed as an ineffective and often corrupt party elite that had turned their backs on conservative principles.
“We need to give our supporters facts that will help put all these fantasies to rest, so everyone can focus with clear minds on the issues that really matter. We need to quit wasting our time, our energy and our credibility on claims that won’t ever convince anyone or bring fresh converts onboard,” the former governor writes, according to The Guardian, which noted that he condemned Trump allies like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.

Advance excerpts from the tell-all tome that were provided to the media include an account of when Christie was hospitalized last fall from COVID, which was published by the New York Times, “Mr. Christie reveals how worried he and others were for his survival when he became infected with the coronavirus after being at the White House around the same time that Mr. Trump and several other aides contracted Covid-19. Mr. Christie writes that his priest arrived in the hospital and rubbed oils on his forehead in the sign of the cross, praying over him.”
“He got a call from a hospitalized Mr. Trump, who had one main concern: “Are you gonna say you got it from me?” Mr. Trump asked him.” Suggesting that the ex-POTUS was more concerned with being blamed for giving the virus to Christie than his friend’s health.
The notion that Christie could save the most rancid elements from the swamp has led to some venturing into what can only be described as fantasyland, with the Daily Beast publishing a story that borders on parody that a Christie-Liz Cheney tag team could finally be the silver bullet that would spell the end of the resilient Trump’s miraculous political fortunes, an idea that could only receive credence in the parallel universe that exists within the D.C. Beltway.

Christie’s elevated profile as the man who would “save” the GOP from Trump included a segment on Fox & Friends, where he criticized Biden’s embarrassing trip across the pond for the ballyhooed U.N. COP26 climate change summit where cameras captured the “leader” of the free world catching some shut-eye during one of the speeches on what is being portrayed as an apocalyptic threat to humanity.

He also delivered a speech before the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas where he presented himself to the group as the man who could lead the GOP out of the wilderness, drawing a harsh response from Trump who issued a fiery statement through his Save America PAC throwing shade at the idea that Christie is popular with voters.
The “savior” responded to Trump’s criticism during an interview with Axios on HBO, rebutting the idea that he was “massacred” by saying that he got 60 percent of the vote when he ran for reelection in 2013 and won while Trump lost to Joe Biden.
Christie is getting the attention now but he is likely the first in a long parade of establishment retreads who will be looking to capitalize on the miserable performance of Biden and his wrecking crew to present themselves as viable alternatives to Trump.
