Critics of President Joe Biden’s “reckless open border policies,” as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis describes the administration’s course, frequently suggest that the White House incentivizes migrants to flock to America, and what better incentive is there than cold, hard U.S. cash, and plenty of it.
Of course, senior White House adviser Cedric Richmond appeared on Fox News Sunday to call that an “absurd assumption,” while saying the Biden Justice Department will decide how much compensation migrants families separated at the border will receive under the guise that it potentially “saves the taxpayers money.” Payments that may run as high as $450,000 per individual, or $1 million per family, according to reports. This being a slap in the face to hardworking American families struggling in an economy marred by persistent inflation and a supply chain crisis, and thousands of Americans, to include many frontline workers, losing their jobs due to Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
With a mind-boggling 1.7 million illegal immigrant encounters on the southern border this year alone and most allowed to stay, it’s clear that shutting down this massive flow of humanity isn’t a priority for the Biden White House. In fact, as Fox News host Tucker Carlson has opined on more than one occasion, it appears to be part of a greater plan to alter the U.S. electorate in favor of the Democratic Party. Carlson calls it the “replacement theory.”
What is a priority is compensating migrant families separated at the border during the Trump administration — though little reported, the separation of children from illegal immigrant parents began under former President Barack Obama, as children are not allowed in many of the federal detention centers where migrants were taken.
Staking out the moral high ground, Richmond justified paying millions of dollars to those who willfully broke our laws, claiming the decision would be made independent of the White House.
“If the DOJ determines that it saves the taxpayers money and it rights a wrong, then they will make the determination that is necessary and I would assume if they make a determination, they’ll come up with what they think is an adequate dollar amount,” Richmond told Fox News host Bill Hemmer.
Hemmer began by pointing to Biden initially calling the compensation claim “garbage,” only to angrily raised his voice several days later to justify the plan to dole out taxpayer money to illegal alien families.
“If in fact, because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you were coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child — you lost your child — it’s gone — you deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance,” Biden said in the clip.
Richmond stated that Biden was “in the loop” all along, and called questions about compensation being an incentive “so insensitive, disrespectful.”
“And I would ask a question of you, whether you support that,” he asked Hemmer. “I mean, at some point, we cannot with a straight face say that parents are willing to separate from a child for a dollar amount. That’s just not true. And we should not talk like that. We keep saying we’re better than that, but we’re not acting like that.”
The Fox News host tried to drill down to just how much money the administration will be gifting illegal immigrants.
“That’s for the Justice Department to decide,” Richmond said. “If it shows that it saves taxpayers money, if it rights a wrong and the Justice Department determines that there is compensation that should be paid, that is an independent Justice Department. But, again, the question is, we took children — that President Trump took children from their parents and some children have never been returned. Do we think that’s okay?”
When reminded the reported $450,000 payout “would be four times the amount that we afford Goldstar families,” after a long pause, Richmond countered: “We don’t talk dollar amount, that the Department of Justice.”
He then tried to divert back to the “absurdity” of calling the payout an incentive. When pressed on the reality that a payout is coming, the White House advisor deferred to the DOJ.
“I want to be clear, we do not tell the Department of Justice what to do. The Department of Justice is an independent agency,” he insisted.
