Out of the gates, NYC mayor-elect confronted by fuming anti-mandates crowds

Newly-elected New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams came face-to-face with angry anti-vaccine-mandate protesters on Wednesday as they loudly marched to his office and confronted him as he was stepping outside.

Video footage from the protest showed the demonstrators crossing the Brooklyn Bridge wielding signs that read “F–k Joe Biden” and “End The Censorship Of Vaccine Risks,” among other things.

Additional video footage showed the demonstrators, many of them minorities, crowding around Adams and yelling in his face as he stepped out of his office.

In fairness to Adams, he appeared to be interested in actually listening to the protesters versus just dismissing all dissenters like outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Speaking to a reporter amid the protest, he said he wants to sit down with those who are sincere in their concerns about the city’s vaccine mandate.

“In this crowd is some people who are really concerned about their families, their children, and there are some who are just here to aggravate the city. We’ve had enough yelling and screaming,” he said.

“I want to sit down with these family members, I want to hear them, I want to understand what they’re saying. Some people in the crowd, they don’t want a resolution. But these women here that I’ve talked to, they have some real concerns, and I want to hear their concerns because that’s my responsibility as a man,” he said.

“You start with a conversation. That’s where you start from. You start from a conversation. This is not 1980 and David Dinkins [undecipherable] in City Hall. That’s not happening to me. I’m not going to be afraid to walk in my city. I’m not going to be afraid of groups. We’re going to learn how to talk together,” he added.

The difference in attitude between Adams and de Blasio was striking.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that morning (it’s not clear whether his appearance was before or after the protest), Adams undercut de Blasio by saying “we need to revisit how we are going to address the vaccine mandates.”

While he also cautioned that he wasn’t trying “to Monday-morning-quarterback the mayor,” just the mere fact that he was willing to “revisit” the topic spoke volumes.

Ironically, it was also enough to provoke another round of protests — this time from the COVID zealots on Twitter.

Case in point:

De Blasio, meanwhile, continues to double, triple and quadruple down on his mandate.

During an appearance Tuesday also on “Morning Joe,” he outright called union leaders who’re fighting back against the mandate “unpatriotic.”

“Several unions have been, in my view, downright unpatriotic the way they’ve handled this, because they have put their own internal politics ahead of the needs of the people,” he said.

He also attacked local firefighters for calling in “sick” to still get paid while avoiding the mandate.

“That is unconscionable, and I assure you, they’re going to experience some consequences for what they’ve done,” he said.

Incidentally, during his own MSNBC appearance Wednesday, Adams slammed the current mayor for his refusal to negotiate fairly with anti-vaccine-mandate unions.

“What I believe [de Blasio] has failed to do appropriately is sit down with the unions, the leadership,” he said.

That, his critics would say, is one of many things the mayor has “failed to do” …
