The woke St. Louis, Mo. mayor barely missed a beat during an outdoor news conference on Friday as gunfire could be heard in the background.
Mayor Tishaura Jones was mid-sentence at a joint press conference with Kansas City, Missouri’s Mayor Quinton Lucas to discuss violence when she was interrupted by the noise.
“Oh, isn’t that wonderful?” Jones said, barely casting a glance in the direction of the disruption before returning to her comments.
Later she spoke to reporters about the incident and explained that it’s commonplace for her to hear gunshots in her neighborhood.
“Well, as I’ve always said my son and I go to bed to the lullaby of gunshots in the distance more nights than we like to admit to,” Jones, who became the first black mayor of the city last May said. “So, unfortunately, that’s not something that’s uncommon. And we talked about the proliferation of guns, how everyone has access to a gun, and the state legislature literally ties the hands of local mayors in enacting common-sense gun safety laws.”

Lucas echoed similar sentiments about the surprising incident that appeared to reveal that the elected officials seem to have normalized gun violence.
“This is the sort of thing that happens in Kansas City, in Columbia, in Springfield, in too many American cities. Part of why I’m in St. Louis today, and what I have been so heartened by is how hard this community is working to do better for our babies.”
Jones campaigned on a defund the police platform, proposing a $4 million budget cut to the police department earlier this year despite the murder rate in St. Louis reaching a 50-year high in 2020 with a reported 87 homicides per 100,000 residents.
“Failed leadership overseeing the City’s Corrections division has left the City with a huge mess to clean up,” Jones said. “We look forward to bringing effective leadership into the Corrections division that can account for these issues and raise the bar on effective management and oversight of the City Justice Center.”

The Friday incident occurred after the two mayors met with the Justice Department for a roundtable discussion about public safety and toured the Dutchtown neighborhood. Jones and Lucas took to Twitter after the press conference to reinforce just how commonplace gunfire is in their respective hometowns.
“I don’t flinch when gunshots ring out; my son and I often fall asleep to a lullaby of gunshots,” Jones commented on Twitter after the incident. “Mayor Quinton Lucas, Alderman Shane Cohn, and I joined survivors and The Justice Department for a neighborhood talk and walk to see community violence intervention programs up close.”
