Trump releases eye-popping statement on Colin Powell’s passing

Former President Trump released a statement Tuesday on the passing of Colin Powell and he did not shy away from criticism of the ex-military leader.

“Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media. Hope that happens to me someday.”

“He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!”

Powell, 84, died on Monday from complications associated with COVID-19, though he was fully vaccinated. He was afflicted with other aggravating maladies as well, namely the blood cancer multiple myeloma, which severely impairs the body’s resistance to infection as well as its receptiveness to vaccines.

The four-star general had a distinguished career, though his reputation was tarnished by some of his political maneuvers.

An officer in the U.S. Army, he did two tours in the Vietnam War, afterward serving as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan at the age of 49, among other advisory roles in the 1980s. In 1989 he ascended to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the youngest person to ever hold the position.

While serving under former President Bill Clinton, he resigned his tenure in 1993 after the disastrous Battle of Mogadishu in October of that same year, an operation which cost the lives of 19 U.S. servicemen. It is believed by many that then-Defense Secretary Leslie Aspen and President Clinton failed to act upon the urging of Powell for an increase of tanks, armored vehicles, and AC-130 Spectre gunships as air-support for the mission, preferring instead to go in light, using UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, two of which were downed by Somali forces.

This calamitous factor is poured over in the many books on the subject and depicted in the 2001 film, “Blackhawk Down.”

Powell also disagreed with Clinton’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for the U.S. military.

He served as Secretary of State under George W. Bush and suffered much criticism over his advocacy for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, a war largely believed to be mounted based on faulty intelligence but acted upon anyway.

Powell was a self-described Republican but voted twice for former President Obama, in one case rather than his comrade-in-arms, the late Sen. John McCain. Trump’s criticism of Powell comes after years of animosity between the pair. Powell routinely denounced Trump as a threat to the nation over the course of the latter’s presidency, predictably blaming Trump for the so-called insurrection of January 6th.

As such, in January of 2021, Powell told CNN “I can no longer call myself a fellow Republican. I’m not a fellow of anything right now. I’m just a citizen who has voted Republican, voted Democrat throughout my entire career. And right now I’m just watching my country and not concerned with parties.”

He chided Trump for “attempting to overturn the government,” a hackneyed talking point of those on the Left who systematically ignore the murderous but mostly-peaceful riots, fires and assaults on federal buildings – including The White House – during the year of death and destruction of 2020 that was carried out by Marxist groups like BLM and Antifa.

It is worth noting that a day before Trump’s post to Twitter, Ana Navarro took to social media to capitalize on Powell’s death by, you guessed it, railing against Donald Trump, class act that she is.
