California families come out by the thousands against Gov Newsom’s school vaccine mandate

Thousands of Californians took to the streets on Monday to protest Governor Gavin Newsom’s statewide mandate that all kids must be vaccinated in order to attend schools, the nation’s first such order and one that has not gone over well with many parents.

Demonstrations took place across the state with the largest being in Sacramento where peaceful protesters descended on the capitol, many of them carrying signs with slogans including “My Body, My Choice,” “Our Kids Are Not Labrats” and “Let’s Go Brandon” seeking to make their voices heard in opposition of Newsom’s authoritarianism.

Newsom, who is riding high after surviving last month’s recall election, didn’t waste time flexing his muscles when he announced the mandate for all kids to be vaccinated once the FDA gives full approval for children 5 years old and up, a decision that is imminent.

Some parents were accompanied by their children who were kept out of schools and some joined the rallies out of hopes that their absences would send a message to state officials.

One group called “Our Children, Our Choice!” took to Facebook to urge parents to keep their kids out of classes on Monday: “We are calling all Parents, Grandparents, students and teachers who are against the Vaccine Mandate on our children to come protest at the State Capital. Please come in numbers, be loud, let’s stand up for our innocent children and let them know they do not Co-Parent with us!”

Kendall Ramer, a 32-year-old mother expressed concern that there hasn’t been enough time to prove that the vaccines are safe. “Everybody should be able to make their own choice for what’s good for them,” she said, according to the Associated Press, and that she and her husband could homeschool their children once the mandate becomes effective.

Another parent, Armine Adamyan told CBS Los Angeles, “We have to stand up for our children, we have to stand up for our rights,”

“I’m not against the vaccine,” added Adamyan who kept her own kids out of school, “I’m just against the fact that there is no long-term studies on it. You don’t know what can happen with a vaccine further in the future.”

Scenes from the protests were posted on Twitter.

When he announced this controversial school mandate, Newsom likened the COVID jab to other vaccines that are already required although all have a longer and more established track record.

“The state already requires that students are vaccinated against viruses that cause measles, mumps, and rubella – there’s no reason why we wouldn’t do the same for COVID-19. Today’s measure, just like our first-in-the-nation school masking and staff vaccination requirements, is about protecting our children and school staff, and keeping them in the classroom,” Newsom said in a statement.

“Vaccines work. It’s why California leads the country in preventing school closures and has the lowest case rates. We encourage other states to follow our lead to keep our kids safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19,” he added.

Newsom drew criticism after it was revealed that his own 12-year-old daughter had not been vaccinated at the time he announced the mandate, not the first time that he has been accused of hypocrisy over his draconian approach for COVID, most notably his violation of restrictions last year when he was busted partying at an expensive Napa Valley eatery.

Last week, President Joe Biden announced the “good news” that the government has purchased enough vaccines for all children between 5 and 11 to be jabbed.

Once the FDA gives its blessing, Newsom will likely be followed by other Democrat governors who will impose their own mandates, although it is unlikely that the red states will do likewise, setting the stage for a huge showdown with the White House.
