House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who claims to be a devout Catholic but nevertheless believes in abortion — which is vehemently opposed by the Church — met with Pope Francis in Rome over the weekend and was scheduled to perform a reading at Mass but was prevented from doing so due to a “security issue.”
Photos posted by various news agencies show Pelosi meeting Francis during a private visit on Sunday “amid a backdrop of conservative U.S. bishops targeting pro-choice American Catholic politicians,” the National Catholic Reporter noted, citing the Vatican’s daily bulletin.
After their meeting, Pelosi announced it herself on Twitter, saying “it was a spiritual, personal and official honor to have an audience with His Holiness.”
“His Holiness’s leadership is a source of joy and hope for Catholics and for all people, challenging each of us to be good stewards of God’s creation, to act on climate, to embrace the refugee, the immigrant and the poor, and to recognize the dignity and divinity in everyone,” she wrote. “In San Francisco, we take special pride in Pope Francis, who shares the namesake of our city and whose song of St. Francis is our anthem.”
In a statement, she alluded to and praised the Pope’s climate change activism.
“His Holiness’s encyclical Laudato Si’ is a powerful challenge to the global community to act decisively on the climate crisis with special attention to the most vulnerable communities,” she said. “I expressed the gratitude of those working on climate action in the Congress for the immense moral clarity and urgency that His Holiness continues to bring to the climate crisis, and how we continue to cherish his address to the Joint Session of Congress in 2015.”
She added: “His Holiness commands our attention to honor the Gospel of Matthew by serving ‘the least of these,’ lifting up those who have been left out or left behind, especially in the time of COVID.”
Also Sunday, Pelosi was to give the second reading at a Mass in Rome but a “security incident” prevented her from doing so, according to Bree A. Dail, The Epoch’s Time’s Rome correspondent. She posted a video of Paulist Fr. Steven Petroff, rector of St. Patrick’s Catholic American Parish, making the announcement that Speaker wouldn’t be appearing.
ROME—@SpeakerPelosi reportedly heckled at St Patrick’s Catholic American Parish, in Rome, causing her to abruptly leave the Mass she was attending.

The incident drew varied responses on social media.
Inviting Nancy Pelosi to serve as the Lector of the Mass Readings is a act if hatred for her and her immortal soul, let alone giving her Communion. This priest and those Bishops like him are, “enemies of the Cross of Christ. Their god is their stomach. Their end is destruction.”

Sounds like Pelosi was going to be allowed to be speaker of the house of Jesus…in place of His representative…glad they escorted her out! And the hypocrisy – to speak on “listening” when she tore up Pres. Trumps State of the Union Address.

Actually, @SpeakerPelosi had to leave mass because her skin was starting to burn sitting in that pew. So it WAS a security incident, and she had to leave so she didn’t burst into flames.

Granted, I’m surprised she didn’t get struck down by lightning, but I still wouldn’t heckle her at mass.

Pelosi’s meeting with the pontiff comes after her hometown archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, released a pastoral letter in which he announced that pro-abortion Catholic politicians like her — and like Joe Biden, the country’s second Catholic president — would not be welcome to receive Holy Communion in his diocese. Biden is scheduled to meet with Francis in a few weeks.
In addition, Cordileone has targeted her in recent weeks with a “Rose and Rosary” campaign, in which he has urged Catholics around the country to say a Rosary for her once a week and to fast on Fridays for “conversion of her heart.”
Thousands of small roses were delivered to Pelosi’s office as part of the campaign shortly after the House passed the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021, which — if it passes in the Senate — will codify the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion into law.
“Wonderful,” tweeted Cordileone upon hearing the news. “Each of these 1000 roses represents one Catholic praying a rosary and fasting on Fridays for Speaker Nancy Pelosi through October. May the Blessed Mother touch her heart. Join me in this Rose and Rosary campaign.”
