‘Kids need a better union’: Gov. Newsom takes beating after mandating vaccines for students, not teachers

Governor Gavin Newsom faced intense backlash after he issued the first-in-the-nation mandate for California schoolchildren to receive a COVID-19 vaccination to attend school on Friday.

Newsom also took a browbeating for what he didn’t do as the mandate did not include school teachers who currently have the option to test weekly or be inoculated which led to accusations of him being in bed with the overly powerful teachers’ unions.

‘Kids must get vaccine, but teacher don’t have to. The lesson? Kids need a better union,’ one person tweeted.

The mandate will add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of around 10 vaccines currently required for California school kids in order to attend in-person school once it gets final approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for anyone aged 12 and up and could go into effect as early as January according to the governor’s comments.

Newsom announced the mandate on Friday at a San Francisco middle school where he explained that he believed the new requirement would help schools stay open to in-person learning while ignoring the fact that the virus poses little risk to the under 18 age group. It was even shown earlier this year that the hospitalization rates for kids in California were “grossly inflated.”

“We want to end this pandemic. We are all exhausted by it,” Newsom said. “We are exhausted by the seasonality of it. We are exhausted by the variants and mutations.”

“We hope this encourages folks to get vaccinated,” Newsom said. “We have no trepidation, no hesitancy in encouraging local districts to move forward more expeditiously…we expect on the basis of other similar requirements that you’ll start to see an uptick in people getting vaccinated well before those dates that are established.”

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine was approved for ages 16 and older on August 23  and is currently authorized under an emergency use authorization (EUA) for kids aged 12 to 15. Once full approval for the vaccine is issued for those 12 and up, it will become a requirement to enter the 7th grade in California schools.

Newsom explained that directives on vaccines for teachers would come from President Joe Biden’s mandate now being drafted by the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that Biden, his staff, and Congress are conveniently exempt from.

“But on the basis of the guidelines and the regulations that will be forthcoming from the Biden administration as it relates to all employees, we will consider moving that forward,” he explained.

“This is about keeping our kids safe & healthy,” the 53-year-old governor tweeted.

Senate Bill 277 is a California law passed in 2015 that locked in the current list of vaccines required for school children with extremely limited medical exceptions. However, the law requires that any new vaccine added to the list allows parents to opt out for religious and medical reasons.

However, it remains to be seen if the religious exemptions in place for new vaccines are just for show as there have been many reports of health care workers being denied religious exemptions in the leftist state.

Many took to social media to express their skepticism that it was truly intended to keep kids safe and healthy as there are currently different rules for school teachers and heroin addicts.

Others wondered what would happen if students didn’t meet the vaccination deadline set by the governor’s edict.
