With much of the media driving political discord in America in concert with the Democratic Party, frequently denouncing the right as racists and deplorables, even insurrectionists, along with frequent talk of a looming civil war, a “shocking” new poll shows that a large number of Americans are prepared to split the country between red states and blue states.
A poll from the Center for Politics, at the University of Virginia, showed that “roughly 4 in 10 (41%) of Biden and half (52%) of Trump voters at least somewhat agree that it’s time to split the country, favoring blue/red states seceding from the union.”
Naturally, this resulted in headlines such as this: “Majority of Trump Voters Now in Favor of Seceding from the Union.”
While the headline lends credence to the Democratic Party’s insurrection narrative playing out in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s politically-driven Jan 6. select committee, it doesn’t account for nearly as many Biden voters also being on board.
Other findings from the Center for Politics poll that partnered with Project Home Fire, a new initiative dedicated to finding common ground in American politics, are seen here:
Majorities — often large majorities — of both Biden and Trump voters express some form of distrust for voters, elected officials, and media sources they associate with the other side. A strong majority of Trump voters see no real difference between Democrats and socialists, and a majority of Biden voters at least somewhat agree that there is no real difference between Republicans and fascists.
Significant numbers of both Trump and Biden voters show a willingness to consider violating democratic tendencies and norms if needed to serve their priorities. Roughly 2 in 10 Trump and Biden voters strongly agree it would be better if a “President could take needed actions without being constrained by Congress or courts.”
Of course, there’s some merit in seeing Democrats as socialists, based on the party’s agenda, to consider Republicans to be “fascists” is rather delusional — particularly so given the irony of the totalitarian stance many Democrat officials have taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other findings include roughly 80% of Trump and Biden voters viewing democracy as preferable to any non-democratic kind of government.
“On the other hand, more than 6 in 10 Trump and Biden voters see America as less a representative democracy and more a system that is run by and rigged for the benefit of the wealthy,” the poll reported. “Overall, more than two-thirds support — and one-third strongly — emboldening and empowering strong leaders and taking the law into their own hands when it comes to dealing with people or groups they view as dangerous.”
One thing is certain, these are extremely polarizing times in America, where there are few, if any, commonalities between left and right.
Conservative talk radio show host Jesse Kelly spoke on this Thursday evening on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
“I do not think we’re one nation anymore. We’re at least two separate nations,” Kelly said, responding to the perception people have of a new attack ad on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Host Tucker Carlson said he hoped his guest was wrong, but then noted that Kelly rarely is as he questioned whether people might be deterred from visiting Florida based on the content of that ad.
“That’s why I think we’re already separating as a nation. I think they are,” Kelly replied. “It shows when you look at the people leaving California and going to a place like Texas, we have numbers, they are mostly Republican. It’s mostly Republicans leaving New York and going to Florida. The nation is separating because we’re such different people.”
“What do we have in common anymore?” he continued. “One side believes babies should be protected. The other openly brags about slaughtering them. One side believes basic biology things, a man born a man remains a man. The other side believes that can be taken care of with a scalpel and lipstick. Even our foreign adversaries — China is our enemy. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs [Gen. Mark Milley], he’s inside China. The only person deeper inside China than him is [Rep.] Eric Swalwell. Half of the country knows China is an enemy, we just don’t share things in common.”
