Parents of locked up Marine say coward generals are making him pay for botched withdrawal

The Marine Infantry Officer who made headlines and was relieved of duty for simply asking for accountability from military leadership after the botched Afghanistan withdrawal is now in solitary confinement for allegedly violating a gag order. The parents of Lt. Col. Scheller appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” in an exclusive interview on Tuesday to plead their son’s case.

His father, Stu Scheller, Sr., offered his reaction to the ongoing congressional hearings on Afghanistan.

“Our son called for accountability. Throughout the hearing today I don’t feel like they accepted accountability. I am extremely disappointed. It’s no coincidence in my opinion that they put a gag order on him and they put him in prison the day before they had to appear in front of senators and tomorrow in front of congressmen,” he told host Laura Ingraham.

“I think that is fairly an act of cowardice,” Scheller said.

He went on to describe how his son had been fast-tracked through his career and up the ranks in the Marine Corps, and that up until a month ago, Lt. Col. Scheller had been considered a hero by his leaders.

“But on August 26th, when 13 of our servicemen died at the Kabul airport, something inside of our son snapped. He was angry. He, in principle — he is a very courageous and principled man — but when that happened, he had to go and ask his leaders for accountability,” he concluded.

Ingraham turned to Cathy Scheller for her initial response to what her son and family are enduring.

“Cathy, your son is in military prison tonight. As a mother, when you watch Gen. Mark Milley asked point-blank if he would resign, I want your reaction.”

Mrs. Scheller replied, “Let me explain why the accountability is so important. During our war in last 20 years we lost around 7,000 troops. We have lost in the last 20 years between 30 up to 100,000 troops from suicide. They need that accountability. They need to know what they did mattered. So many lives can be saved on the back side by being held accountable.”

“And I say take that rank and put it down,”she added.

On Tuesday, Tucker Carlson spoke with Lt. Col. Scheller’s attorney, Tony Buzbee on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“When somebody tried to speak out and say: look, we could have done a lot better. We owed these Marines, and sailors, and Army personnel better than that. They not only told them to shut up, but when he didn’t shut up they put him in jail,” Buzbee said.

“People see this for what it is. They see this from the top brass trying to shirk responsibility and when somebody in the chain of command speaks up, they’re silenced – we can do better than that,” he added.

“This is a man who is a 17-year Marine – a Marine Officer – an infantry officer, just like I was – A guy whose conscience required him to speak out and the American military, specifically the US Marine Corps…has put him in jail for that,” he continued. “This will not stand.”

Scheller’s father reiterated the double standard.

“I challenge the American people: is that okay with you? Is it okay with you that a 17-year infantry officer that put his life on the line to protect you and protect your children, is it okay with you that he is put in jail and is facing a court-martial?” he demanded.

“The only one being held accountable for this botched situation is my son by the generals,” he said.

The parents and Ingraham noted that Scheller has not had any charges brought against him but he is not only in solitary confinement but is disallowed from speaking with anyone. According to the parents, their son has only been allowed to make one phone call, when he asked his parents to get in touch with Tony Buzbee.

According to Buzbee, however, Lt. Col. Scheller is in good spirits. The attorney said the support they have received from the public has been “overwhelming;” and that one group has already raised over $200,000 to donate towards his legal expenses.

“This is a story that isn’t going away soon. It’s beyond a travesty,” Ingraham concluded.
