A Democrat representative who pushed for fines against unmasked lawmakers in the Capitol now faces criticism after video emerges of her partying maskless.
It was progressive Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) celebrating her birthday without a mask in an outdoor setting. The video, originally posted on Instagram by fellow Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), has raised eyebrows on social media and sparked commentary from critics of the representative
Spencer Brown captured the video and posted it on Twitter with the caption: “Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), celebrated her birthday maskless last night and blew out candles on her cake, according to video from Rep. Tlaib. Jayapal has said those who don’t wear masks are behaving “cruelly” and called for fines to be issued to unmasked members of Congress.”

Jayapal called out those who reject the masks and stated on January 12: “Any Member who refuses to wear a mask should be fully held accountable for endangering our lives because of their selfish idiocy. I’m calling for every single Member who refuses to wear a mask in the Capitol to be fined and removed from the floor by the Sergeant at Arms.”
But that wasn’t Jayapal’s only tweet back. She turned it into a three-piece thread that continued her rant, saying: “While I am isolating per the Capitol Physician’s instructions, I will continue to work to the best of my ability because the deep urgency of our many crises is paramount.”
Jayapal also invoked Trump’s name despite Biden’s administration set to inhabit the White House: “I share the outrage and anger of those across America who have watched Trump fail to combat this raging pandemic and refuse to take care of Americans who are suffering, dying, and devastated. I will not rest until I do everything in my power to remove this President from office.”
Just one day before Jayapal’s complaints on Twitter, she had reportedly tested positive, as stated on her House.gov webpage. This could have taken place while the Capitol was on lockdown during the January 6 incident, but that is difficult to determine.
She blamed Republicans for falling ill, as stated on Forbes. She suggested it was the fault of Republicans who didn’t wear masks. However, two other colleagues tested positive around the same time and it’s difficult to determine exactly where and when one contracts the disease. CNBC confirmed that Rep. Brad Schneider, D – Illinois, and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D – New Jersey, also tested positive around the same time as lawmaker Jayapal.
Fast forward to September and Jayapal’s optics conflict with her rhetoric and calls for fines against fellow Congresspeople.
Critics demand politicians lead by example instead of portraying a ‘rules for thee, but not for me’ persona.
Not just maskless but blowing on a cake. Who does that anymore?

Politicians think they can reform the government but can’t come up with a second way to blow out candles.

And they wonder why we get a little questionable when they want to put masks on 2 year olds.
