A New Jersey police officer is being praised for catching a baby who had been dropped off a second-story balcony this Sunday.
The Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) received a call about a man threatening a baby on Sunday at Rove Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey, and several officers were dispatched to the scene. The deranged man was holding a baby over the railing of the second-story balcony in what turned into a tense and lengthy standoff, reported NorthJersey.com.
When the man did the unthinkable, and actually dropped the baby, JCPD Officer Eduardo Matute was below and was able to catch the 1-month-old infant safely.
The baby was taken to the hospital as a reasonable precaution, said city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione. The child appeared to be well, according to an Instagram post by Mayor Steve Fulop which shows Matute holding the sleeping baby in a blanket at the hospital.
“Thankfully the baby wasn’t harmed physically,” wrote Fulop.

As for the man who dropped the baby, he remains unidentified but Wallace-Scalcione told the press that he was arrested on the spot, with pending charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child, with a further investigation ongoing.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez took to Twitter to congratulate the JCPD for their timely response and quick action that saved the baby from a potentially fatal fall, and in particular Matute, alongside the other responding officers, Joseph Casey, and Incident Commander Captain Michael McKerry:
Feeling grateful for the efforts of the Jersey City Police Officers who performed heroically today to keep this baby safe. Thank you JCPD! #jerseycity pic.twitter.com/UptJWywzEe

The response on Twitter was overwhelmingly an expression of relief and thanks, while some decried the perpetrator for putting a 1-month-old baby in such a position:
My god! What is the actual…. is wrong with ppl? How could you do that? who does that? Absolutely heartbreaking. That cop is a hero.

Not even the crowd usually very critical of the police had anything bad to say, as everyone, especially in Jersey City, heaved a sigh of relief at the good news for the baby.
