A woman who gave birth at the surprising age of 62 spoke about her unusual pregnancy during the baptism of her children.
Kathy Blattner, 62, of Waterloo, Illinois, first made the news in November of 2020 when she was pregnant. Being past menopause, Blattner wasn’t able to conceive, so her daughter, Sarah Utz, donated some of her eggs a few years ago, however.
Dr. Sherman Silber, Blattner’s doctor, combined the eggs with sperm from Blattner’s husband, aged 66, to create several viable embryos. To avoid any misunderstanding, it should be noted that Blattner’s husband is the step-father of Utz, and so the two do not actually share any familial DNA, Fox2Now reported.
Several years ago, the in vitro fertilization of Blattner led to the pregnancy and birth of Blattner’s son Charles. Last year, she used the other embryo (frozen and preserved) to become pregnant with her daughter Erma, who was born earlier this year.
Blattner used the occasion of her children and grandchildren being baptized to speak to Fox about her unusual pregnancy.
“Every day, I get up and go into her room and I am just so thankful that I get to have this,” said Blattner about her pregnancy with Erma. “There are people that walk up to us in restaurants here in town, and they’ll say, ‘I know who you are and I think it’s wonderful.”
While pregnancy in older women is usually associated with much greater risk of complications, which is why many doctors are reluctant to perform IVF on women over 50, Blattner’s pregnancy with Erma was mostly healthy. Her blood pressure did spike to concerning levels at 34 weeks into the pregnancy, however, which led to her giving birth early to Erma. Erma then had to stay in the hospital for about 4 weeks, learning to eat on her own, but once she came home “it’s been just wonderful ever since,” said Blattner.
Kathy Blattner’s husband, John Blattner, 66, had warm words for his wife and their newfound parenthood together: “I wouldn’t have any of this without my wife’s inspiration, motivation, drive. She’s wonderful.”
Blattner’s daughter, Sarah Utz, who was also pregnant at roughly the same time as Blattner was with baby Erma, was proud of her role in helping her mother add to the family:
“People learn our story, and they’re not afraid to ask about it, and, it’s an honor that I get to encourage other women to have babies.”
Blattner wanted to share the story of her successful births because she wants everyone to know how grateful she is for her family, saying that she wants women to know they don’t have to give up dreams of having a baby at almost any age.
