While there’s no shortage of people in America who hate the U.S., after all, that is a driving theme in many of our institutions of higher learning, it’s still hard to imagine someone would desecrate the memory of those who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice for their countrymen.
A California memorial honoring 13 U.S. service members killed by a suicide bomber at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan has been vandalized.
The memorial featured 13 American flags and one Marine Corps flag attached to an overpass fence above the 91 Freeway in Riverside, which is south of San Bernardino, and an alert citizen called police after noticing that the flags were damaged.
The Riverside Police Department shared the details of the vandalism on its official Facebook page, The accompanying photos showed that many of the flags had been seriously cut or otherwise ripped.
“At this point, we don’t have any suspect description but it’s obvious the flags were intentionally damaged,” the post read.
“We want to thank the group ‘What is Going on in Riverside County’ for bringing this crime to our attention,” the RPD added. “With help from two citizens, the flags were carefully removed and will be turned over later today to local Boy Scout Troop 703 for proper retirement.”
On Thursday, August 26, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a gate outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, killing eleven U.S. Marines, an Army soldier and a Navy corpsman.
The terrorist group ISIS-K, an ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan and Pakistan, was behind the attack.
Ten of the victims, nine Marines and the Navy corpsman, were based out of nearby Camp Pendleton, according to Fox News. Two of them were from Riverside.
Members of the Riverside community were quick to respond and replace the ripped American flags.

Gold Star families of the 13 servicemembers have already been forced to endure the disrespectful behavior of President Joe Biden, who was seen repeatedly glancing at his watch while attending the dignified transfer of the remains at Dover Air Force Base.
Darin Hoover, father of Marine Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover, commented on the incident during an appearance on Fox News.
“In reference to the checking of his watch, that didn’t happen just once. It happened on every single one that came out of that airplane. It happened on every single one of them,” the distraught father said. “They would release the salute, and he would look down at his watch on every last one. All thirteen, he looked down at his watch.”
Mark Schmitz, father of Marine Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz, was equally offended.
“I leaned into my son’s mother’s ear and I said, ‘I swear to God, if he checks his watch one more time,’ and that was probably only four times in,” he said. “I couldn’t look at him anymore after that. Considering the time and why we were there, I found it to be the most disrespectful thing I’d ever seen.”
