Web host GoDaddy announced Friday that the company has dropped a site established for people to report violations of Texas law banning abortions after six weeks in the latest corporate pushback against the Lone Star State.
Officials with the group Texas Right to Life were told by the popular web host they had 24 hours to find another provider after putting up a site — ProLifeWhistleblower.com — where people could anonymously file reports about alleged violators of the law which the U.S. Supreme Court refused to strike down earlier this week in a 5-4 ruling that did not examine its constitutionality.
The law bars abortions in the state past six weeks, when fetal heart tones are most often first detected. The law allows people to sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion beyond the six-week period; successful plaintiffs would then be entitled to $10,000.
“Last night, we informed prolifewhistleblower.com they have violated GoDaddy’s terms of service and have 24 hours to move to a different provider,” GoDaddy said in a statement, according to the Washington Examiner.
The organization said it planned to put the whistleblower site back online with a different web hosting service.
“Our IT team is already in process of transferring our assets to another provider, and we’ll have the site restored within 24-48 hours. Come back soon,” said a spokeswoman for the organization in a statement to NBC News.
Texas Right to Life explained the unique nature of the law on its webpage before it was taken down.
“The Texas Heartbeat Act is unique because it calls upon private citizens to hold abortion providers and their enablers accountable,” the organization noted on its website, according to The Blaze. “Any person can sue any abortion provider who kills an unborn child after six weeks of gestation—and any person can sue anyone who aids or abets these illegal abortions. All of these individuals must pay damages to the person who sued them of at least $10,000 for each illegal abortion that they perform or assist.”
News that the organization is being dropped by GoDaddy comes on the heels of earlier reports on Friday that a Texas judge granted Planned Parenthood protection from lawsuits filed by Right to Life Texas in reference to the ‘heartbeat’ law.
The ruling from Judge Maya Guerra Gamble in Travis County does not stop the law from being in effect but rather blocks pro-life activists from being able to sue abortion providers.
“The Court finds that S.B. 8 creates a probable, irreparable, and imminent injury in the interim for which plaintiffs and their physicians, staff and patients throughout Texas have no adequate remedy at law if plaintiffs, their physicians, and staff are subjected to private enforcement lawsuits against them under S.B. 8,” Gamble noted in her ruling.
“This restraining order offers protection to the brave health care providers and staff at Planned Parenthood health centers throughout Texas, who have continued to offer care as best they can within the law while facing surveillance, harassment, and threats from vigilantes eager to stop them,” said Helene Krasnoff for Planned Parenthood. “But make no mistake: this is not enough relief for Texas.”
GoDaddy is the latest corporation to take action in support of abortion providers against the Texas law.
Lyft CEO Logan Green announced Friday via Twitter that his company would provide free legal services to any of its drivers who may be caught up in any lawsuits.
“TX SB8 threatens to punish drivers for getting people where they need to go— especially women exercising their right to choose. @Lyft has created a Driver Legal Defense Fund to cover 100% of legal fees for drivers sued under SB8 while driving on our platform,” he wrote.
