The Squad NOT happy with Sen. Manchin over his call for a ‘pause’ on massive spending bill

While Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) may be a Democrat, that hasn’t spared him from the wrath of progressives for daring to dissent.

On Wednesday, Manchin told his Senate colleagues at a West Virginia Chamber of Commerce hosted event to stop and “hit the pause button” before “rushing to spend trillions on new government programs.”

While the exact details of the $3.5 trillion spending package are still being worked out by eager Democratic lobbyists, Senator Manchin has expressed concerns about “runaway inflation,” and the timing of such a massive, complicated bill in the midst of the delta variant outbreak and fallout from the calamitous retreat from Afghanistan.

On Thursday, Manchin also wrote a forceful opinion piece stating why he couldn’t support a $3.5 trillion bill or “anywhere near that level of additional spending, without greater clarity about why Congress chooses to ignore the serious effects inflation and debt have on existing government programs.”

“I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster,” wrote Manchin in the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

While Manchin has been consistent about concerns regarding such a huge price tag, the rage of the progressives, notably members of the ‘Squad’ over this latest apostasy was swift and widespread:

The New York Magazine Intelligencer shrieked that Manchin has “put Biden’s presidency in mortal danger,” openly contending that the Democrats’ best chance of passing the bill is to simply rush it through.  The Intelligencer went into fits detailing how Manchin’s “pause” upsets the house of cards the Democratic strategy for passing the bill is built on and is likely to “provoke distrust,” and potentially “set off a cycle of failure.”

The New York Times also went into fits when noting that “with Mr. Manchin’s vow, passage of the full For the People Act appears to be impossible.”

As usual, the White House declined to comment.
