‘Jew. I have a question’: Banner that ignited internet angst has seemingly innocent intention, but many don’t buy it

Talk about a misperception, a banner being towed behind a plane in South Florida turned a lot of heads and created plenty of angst for some.

The message on the banner read: “JEW. I HAVE A QUESTION…”

The Jewish population in South Florida is estimated to be above 500,000 and it’s no surprise that the banner soaring above Pembroke Pines was seen by many as hateful and antisemitic.

Except that it wasn’t.

In fact, it was a marriage proposal. A message of love to a woman who goes by the name Jew, according to Local 10 News WPLG.

But before that was reported, someone had sent a photo of the banner to Liora Rez, executive director of StopAntisemitism.org.

“I was shocked, as many people were,” she told WPLG. “Everyone’s sensitivities and alarm levels are set at such a high level when seeing a banner that blatantly says, ‘Jew. I have a question.’”

Rez called the police and pulled the flight manifest from nearby North Perry Airport.

“The banner and flight originated at Aerial Banner, Inc. at North Perry Airport, where they told Local 10 News’ Glenna Milberg it was actually a marriage proposal, like so many they do, and a woman nicknamed Jew raised no eyebrows until a call from the Anti-Defamation League,” the ABC affiliate reported.

“It was like, ‘Wait, what? What are you talking about?’” said Milo Srkal Jr. with Aerial Banners, Inc. “And then after sitting back, thinking about it, reading a few things, and having things explained to us, it was like, ‘Oh my God.’”

Interestingly, Rez appeared to take the explanation with a grain of salt, based on a follow-up tweet from her organization:

“Remember the plane banner flying over the Miami area that read – ‘Jew. I have a question’? Apparently it’s a marriage proposal HOWEVER the happy couple is no where to be found but allegedly “Jew” said yes. Are you buying it?”

One thing is certain, the banner prompted plenty of online chatter with more than a few calling BS, while others suggested people are too quick to judge.

Here’s a small sampling of some of the responses to the story from Twitter:
