‘Base-brawl’ breaks out at MLB game when fans violently battle in stands

A base-brawl broke out in the stands during an MLB game at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif., which prompted bystanders, as standard practice, to grab their phones and start recording.

In what seems to be three-on-one fisticuffs, all of the combatants might have been San Diego Padres fans judging by the jerseys they were wearing, so presumably something other than team rivalry led to the altercation.

In the footage, a brave woman tried to directly intercede, to no avail, as one of the men got sent tumbling over a row of seats. The situation appeared to briefly calm down, before punches start getting thrown again along with grappling. Again the woman got between the combatants, as other bystanders tried to restore harmony to some degree.

One of those allegedly involved appeared to be wearing a Flavor Flav-style amulet of some kind.

Given the litigious nature of our society, it’s perhaps not much of a surprise that onlookers in situations of this kind might be reluctant to jump in the middle of the fracas, in addition to the desire to avoid bodily injury to themselves.

There’s also the strong desire to make a splash on social media with viral footage of a throw down. As alluded to above, it is unknown as to what prompted the scuffle.

Citing a comment by a social media user, the Brobible website indicated that “security showed up half an inning later and the entire section clowned on them for missing the altercation. They also claimed the absence of security was even stranger because there was a very large police presence at the game.”

TMZ added the cops didn’t arrest anyone because the brawlers left before security or police officers arrived on the scene. The video does appear to show the trio walking away from the row where it all took place.

In the Wednesday night action on the field, the Los Angeles Dodgers bested the Padres by a score of 5-3 in a game that went 16 innings (even with the man-on-second rule in place). As a side note, MLB is reportedly going back to the traditional extra-inning rules in 2022.

Baseball is a far more entertaining product in person than on TV and typically suitable for the entire family.

There is usually a lot going on, both on and off the field, but most fans can engage in lighthearted banter when sitting near each other that never gets physical.

Earlier the MLB season,  brawls between fans occurred at stadiums in Denver, Houston, Chicago, and Miami, however. Grown men and women sometimes forget that wearing opposing team jerseys does not make them members of a team rather than just being part of the audience who are just there to have fun.

Brawls have also happened this month at National Football League pre-season games in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.
