While there’s a great desire among the American people to help those Afghans who assisted U.S. troops during the lengthy war in Afghanistan, there’s also mounting concern that these deserving Afghans aren’t the only ones being helped.
The concern is that Afghans who did nothing to help America and who may even harbor nefarious intentions toward the U.S. are also being relocated from Afghanistan.
This concern is shared by various top agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
During a joint call Friday between officials from said agencies, CBP stressed the need for continued “careful and thorough vetting” of Afghan evacuees, according to ABC News.
The vetting that’s been performed thus far has led to several Afghans being “flagged for concern,” CBP official Keri Brady said during the call.
Up to 100 Afghans seeking U.S. resettlement have been flagged by terror watch-lists.

“CBP has deployed resources to overseas bases where Afghans are being transported to conduct vetting and screening using biometrics, along with counterparts from the FBI,” ABC News reported.
The concern specifically is that some Afghans with nefarious intentions may be trying to use the relocation process to find a way into the United States.
“We can’t rule out that this could be some type of additional motivator,” DHS official Timothy Langan, the assistant director of the agency’s counter-terrorism division, reportedly said during the call.
DHS is also monitoring potential threats within the homeland by keeping an eye out for those espousing “narratives associated with al-Qaida, ISIS or other foreign terrorist group, and whether they would view the events occurring in Afghanistan as an opportunity to engage in violence here at home,” according to John Cohen of DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis.
Some of this was confirmed by White House press secretary Jen Psaki during Friday’s briefing.
“Already, DHS has been working closely with agencies across government – including our military, diplomats, intelligence community and law enforcement professionals, and many others – to ensure all Afghans are screened and vetted prior to being allowed into the United States,” she told reporters.
However, congressional Republicans have said that the Biden administration’s claims aren’t matching with reality.
“We don’t know who a lot of people are that are being transported out of Afghanistan right now. There are people being transported who don’t have any ID whatsoever. Again, I don’t know the full extent of that because there is so much chaos,” Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson said during a press conference Wednesday outside Fort McCoy.

He added that he completely supports the relocation process but is simply asking for it to be carried out more meticulously.
“I share the heartfelt desire of our Afghanistan veterans who worked with so many people in Afghanistan as allies, whose lives have been saved by some of these people. They want them out of danger. They don’t want them slaughtered by the Taliban. … So I share that heartfelt desire,” he said.
“But at the same time, because this wasn’t pre-planned, this wasn’t organized and we have such chaos now, we have to understand there is a danger to this country. And we need to recognize that so we have to take our time. We can’t rush through the process, we can’t be playing a numbers game,” he continued.
He further argued that it’s as if the Biden administration is trying to play a “numbers” game, meaning it’s prioritizing quantity over quality
“This isn’t a success until we know we’ve had people here and they’re successfully ingrained in society. But unfortunately, this administration’s lack of planning their incompetence has not set us up for easy success here,” he concluded.
Indeed, this administration has been beset by constant, endless incompetence, especially in regard to the situation in Afghanistan, as noted by Clinton-era House speaker Newt Gingrich during an appearance Friday on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
“We have not seen a president this incompetent, we haven’t seen a president surrender to an enemy in the way that Joe Biden has. And he’s allowed a 7th century tribal group to defeat the most powerful country in the 21st century. It’s an astonishing outcome,” he said.

He added that he’d like to see some investigations be conducted and some people be fired.
“So I think the Congress, if they actually cared about America, and wanted to put America first rather than partisan politics, both the House and Senate would go into special sessions – one, to hold hearings and really try to get at the truth,” he said.
“Two, I think, to insist on firing an entire group of people. You can’t, as a practical matter, fire the president, but the national security adviser, the secretary of state, secretary of defense, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, commander of the Central Command … I mean, we’ve learned that the system has failed.”
